  • AFCS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION ________________________________

    1. General _______ (Ref. Fig. 001 ) The AFCS (Automatic Flight Control System) forms a fully integrated, system where identical design and development principles are applied as far as practicable at all levels of the assembly (pitch, roll, yaw channels). The AFCS assembly is made up of five sub-systems, fully duplicated except for the automatic throttle control sub-system (ATS). These subsystems are : - Autopilot/Flight Director (AP/FD) (Ref. 22-10-00) - Autostabilizer (YAW DAMPER) (Ref. 22-21-00) - Automatic pitch trim (Ref. 22-23-00) - Autothrottle (ATS) (Ref. 22-31-00) - AFCS Test (Ref. 22-42-00) The purpose of the AFCS is : - to provide automatic control of the aircraft in climb, cruise and landing operations - to display for the pilots, during the automatic landing phase, information on the landing status as well as on the operational capabilities of sys- tems - to supply the pilots with the flight director data required for flying the aircraft manually in certain mode configurations - to ensure aircraft stability in yaw during manual and automatic flight - to perform electric trim functions in manual flight, and pitch automatic trim functions in automatic flight, through slaving of the trimmable hori- zontal stabilizer (THS) - to control the aircraft speed in all phases of flight through slaving of the throttle control levers - to provide self-test sequences to reach the required levels of safety, in conjunction with functions proper to the flight envelope - to facilitate operational maintenance.

    2. Description and Operation _________________________

    A. Autopilot/Flight Director (Ref. 22-10-00) The composition of the AP/FD is detailed at subassembly level. The AP/FD comprises the control unit, computers, indicators and sensors required to ensure the following functions: (1)Control of the aircraft in the basic modes which are obtained immediately as the AP/FD subsystem is engaged or in upper modes (flight path hold mo- des) which are generally selected through operation of push-buttons on the control unit. (2)Automatic control of the aircraft all the way to touchdown in Category 3 A operating conditions and, after a failure, in Category 2 operating conditions. (3)Inclusion of a monitored system in cruise flight, and a duplex monitored system in the automatic landing mode.

    B. Autostabilization (YAW DAMPER) (Ref. 22-21-00) The YAW DAMPER equipment is detailed at sub-assembly level.

  • The YAW DAMPER sub-system provides the following function: - stabilization in yaw, operating both in manual flight and in auto flight. - The YAW DAMPER sub-system is designed to improve the aircraft flight per- formance and to help in damping the autopilot modes.

    C. Automatic Pitch Trim (Ref. 22-23-00) The automatic pitch trim sub-system make-up is detailed at sub-assembly level. The sub-system actuates the trimmable horizontal stabilizer to ensure elec- trically controlled trim in manual flight and automatic trim in automatic flight. A pitch compensation function enables excessive aircraft nose-up to be corrected at certain angles-of-attack and speeds.

    D. Autothrottle (Ref. 22-31-00) The autothrottle sub-system make-up is detailed at sub-assembly level. This sub-system operates the throttle control levers throughout the flight envelope to control the selected mode, the engine rpm and the automatic go-around. An internal monitoring channel ensures failure neutralization so that the aircraft never enters a dangerous speed configuration.

    E. AFCS Test (Ref. 22-42-00) The test sub-system make-up is detailed at sub-assembly level. The purpose of this sub-system is to facilitate operational maintenance of the AFCS and to ensure the integrity of the system at the required safety levels.

    3. Integration in the Aircraft ___________________________ Equipment associated with the AFCS and subject to this integration, e.g. control and indicating items, position returns, stops, overrides, are detai- led at lower levels (sub-assemblies, sub-sub-assemblies, components).

(Ref. Fig. 003 ) (1)Direct current Two separate DC power supplies are used, one on each side of the AFCS. Side 1 is supplied by the Lultimate emergencyL busbar 3PP and side 2 by the LnormalL busbar 1PP. During the landing maneuver a contactor controlled through a +28VDC Lland mode selectedL signal from the AFCS provides isolation of the two busbars so as to segregate the side 1 and side 2 power supplies. Opening of the contactor is taken into account in the landing status function. A battery supplied 28VDC is used by the two microprocessor TEST compu-

  • ters to sustain memories after shut-down of computer normal electrical power supply. (2)Alternating current All the AFCS sub-systems use single-phase AC 115VAC, 26VAC and 5VAC with the neutral grounded to the structure. Two separate single-phase AC 115VAC power supplies (LAL phase) are used, one on each side of the AFCS. Side 1 is supplied by the LnormalL busbar 1XP and side 2 by the LnormalL busbar 2XP. Two single-phase 26VAC supplies, providing the synchro system referen- ces, are derived from the 115VAC LAL phase, defined above. Only one 5VAC power supply is used for lighting all the faces of the con- trol panels.

    B. Hydraulic Power Supply (Ref. Fig. 004 ) The AP servomotors associated with AFCS side 1 are supplied from the Green hydraulic system (which is not affected by an engine failure since it is pressurized by pumps installed on both engine 1 and engine 2). The yaw damper servomotor associated with AFCS side 1 is supplied from the Blue hydraulic system. The AP and yaw damper servomotors associated with AFCS side 2 are supplied from the Yellow hydraulic system. The Blue and Yellow power supplies can be affected by the failure of the corresponding engine. For each hydraulic power supply, a pressure switch delivers to the corres- ponding side the information Lhydraulic supply correctL in the form of an aircraft ground signal.

All the AFCS control and indicating components and equipment are located in the aircraft flight compartment. They are distributed as follows : (1)Glareshield : - AFCS control unit, of modular design, enables engagement and selection of AP/FD modes - AP OFF and AUTOLAND warning lights, in front of each pilot, indicate loss of automatic control capability - FD BARS clearing switches, in front of each pilot
