  • ld Shanghai meets the new in the Ivy Shanghai, a new boutique hotel that continues the trend of preserving the faade of prominent historical landmarks but giving its interiors a

thorough makeover, often with avant-garde designs.

Housed in a former 1950s cinema in a hip residential area that used to be drab factory landscape, Ivy Shanghai promises to arrest the eye with its ivy-clad exterior, from which the hotel derives its name. At the time of this writing, though, the ivy camouflage is still a work-in-progress.

Designed by American-French designer Dillon Garris, whose most notable exploits include dressing up the five-star Shama brand of serviced apartments in Hong Kong and the home of media mogul Rupert Mur-doch, the Ivy Shanghais 46 rooms bear the familiar hallmarks of its designer.

Funky lipstick-red lattice screens, gray brick walls that recalls the alleys of Shanghai, neon-lit rooms and China pop art lend a modern interpretation to traditional Chinese archi-tectural elements.

We wanted to give visitors the full-on Shan-ghai experience, says Garris, who vamps up the interplay of ancient and modern Chinese design with funky lipstick-red lattice screens, grey brick walls reminiscent of Shanghai lanes, neon-lit room numbers and China pop art.

A quieter ambience prevails in the 46 contem-porary-styled guestrooms. These feature hardwood floors that are heated in winter, ultra-luxurious bedding, walk-in wardrobes, and spacious bathrooms with rainforest showers and deep soaking tubs. Traditional red silk pouches on the vanity contain a full

complement of personal hygiene amenities, while signature bath products come in a choice of aromatherapy scents.

Ivy Shanghai will bring a completely new approach to a typical hotel experience, says General Manager Stanley Chung. It is vi-brant and hip, with a comforting residential approach which was achieved by not using a hotel designer. But its our service that truly makes all the difference.

All rooms at Ivy Shanghai come equipped with LCD TVs, CD and DVD players, high-speed broadband and remote controls for AV and air-conditioning. An exciting array of thoughtful extras includes water filters attached to the bathroom tap, decadent red cashmere throws, and an extensive specialty pillow menu. Each guest is also assigned a 24-hour personal butler to attend to every aspect of their stay, from airport pick-ups and unpacking/laundering to full secretarial services and restaurant reservations.

  • illon Garris Design studio and Tecnomar Ship builders announce the launch of the new Velvet 30, onDecember 13th, 2009 in the port

of Viareggio, Italy. Dubbed ISLE, this 30 meters long yacht is the 15th of the Velvet series reaching a maximum speed of 37 knots and a cruising speed of 32 knots. The ships exterior, revisited by renowned designer Dillon Garris is definitely the most progressive and modern Tecnomars fleet. The pure white superstructure hovers above the sable hull highlighted with one red racingtripe. Our clients wanted a ship that they could enjoy with the family on weekends & short holidays. explains the designer. We worked in depth on every aspect of the project including space planning, layout, artist commissioning, and custom furnishings for Isle in close collaboration with our clients desires. The main concept was to bring more space and light into the ship while putting the architecture and artwork on display. This was achieved by widening the windows, sculptured indents highlight the aquatic form of the vessel. The addition of the circular skylight over the interior dining area, and further interior skylights over the galley offering an incredible natural luminosity to the main deck and general interiors. Serenity was the key inspiration to creating a true escape for the families intense lifestyle in the city. The sober style

Dillon Garris has brought to the interior is minimalist yet warm and inviting. An elegant atmosphere, refined with a mix of antique smoked solid oak, double stitched white and egg shell blue leather, brushed stainless steel, and glacier white corian. All soft furnishings are custom designed for the ship are covered in raw thick linen fabrics from Canovas. The yacht is also an impressive jewel case of unique customized art pieces by Raphal Scorbiac, Piet Hein Eek , and Martin Berger whose painted murals with waves and surfers dress the hallway and stairs. Isles layout offers two suites and two cabins all of an incredible light thanks to the oversized windows, allowing for 10 passengers and 4 crew to sleep comfortably. The ships furniture is based upon several modular systems allowing for cozy family dining for 6, and quickly transforms to seat up to 24 guests for parties. The VIP cabin is usually used as an entertainment room with a huge seating area for 10, transformed into a comfortable cabin for two with the aide of a hydraulic lift. In the master cabin, a sliding mirror wall houses a 42 TV. The washroom is separated by polychromatic glass that turns opaque at the flip of a switch to enjoy the 2m2 shower. The large galley has portholes giving a view of the impeccable engine room and was constructed by Boffi nautical division.

  • THE ROAD TO HAPPY VALLEYCLIFF HOUSE, HONG KONG, CHINA

  • he Cliff House was designed for a private family of 5 living near Deep water Bay in Hong Kong. This tropical 5 story home is located on the side of

a cliff with a fine view of the green valley & hills beyond. I love the purity of 1950s case study homes in California, and this house had the perfect setting to mix that aesthetic with the rich local Oriental vibe. They wanted a home where they could enjoy time with their children, friends and family while appreciating their growing art collection. The parents are very involved in the international art, fashion, and culinary scene. So, it was important to create a versatile space allowing for the art to live in harmony with the coziness of family life. Since the house is built on a cliff, you actually walk in on the 3rd floor which separates the house from the living area (1-3 floor), & the sleeping area (4-5th floor). As you go down

to the stairwell to the mezzanine bridge the view is immediately opened by the 3x6 m widow below. The window is framed by a bronze sculpture guard rail made by Raphael Scorbiac, one of the clients favorite artists. To your left there is the living room where weve created a round fireplace in black steel & glass. We descend to the 2nd level via the thick open treaded Oak stairs behind a huge wall which serves for hanging the larger artwork as well as cleansing the eye in order to appreciate each interior view better. In front of this stair is the massive window that we covered in hand woven cashmere sheers towering over a large skylight to the gallery below. This skylight which gives the impression of walking on air also lets the reflection of the water below constantly undulate intricate patterns on the surrounding walls. This 2nd level contains the all steel, glass, & Corian kitchen which is also hidden behind a system of sliding bookshelves. I created a round window in here to echo the fireplace as well as to show off the 1940s train station clock we found in Paris. We customized most of the furniture for this house, most notably the Dining table which has a hammered bronze base and inserts over the massive Oak beam top, as well as the Star table which was made of rosewood in traditional Chinese woodworking techniques using no screws or glue. Over the dining table, weve placed the rather surreal Nuvola lamp designed by Denis Santachiara which is in constant motion mimicking a cloud. This dining room opens onto an outdoor deck hovering over the pool with a lounge, dining, & bbq area. The lower floor which has the guest suite has been designed as a modular space for viewing artwork, studying music, watching TV, having parties, exercising, etc. This floor completely opens up to onto the pool & garden creating an indoor/outdoor experience.
