    LEARNING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE:

    OUTCOMES

    Learning outcomes are statements that describe thecapabilities, knowledge or qualities learners should

    develop as a result of their learning experiences.

    They specify what learners will know or be able to do as

    a result of a learning experience.

    Outcomes are usually expressed as knowledge, skills, or

    attitudes achieved.

    Six learning outcomes proposed

    Outcomes are interrelated and cannot be attained inisolation

    Outcomes obtained by responding to and creating a variety

    of texts (any written, spoken, visual form of communication

    and in any medium) in English

    1. ORAL INTERACTION: LISTENING & RESPONDING AND SPEAKING

    2. VIEWING, READING AND RESPONDING

    3. WRITING

    4. CULTURAL UNDERSTANDINGS

    5. THE SYSTEM OF THE TARGET LANGUAGE (ENGLISH)

    6. LANGUAGE LEARNING STRATEGIES

    The first three outcomes refer to language skills:

    1. Oral interaction: Listening & Responding, and

    Speaking (Listening and Speaking)

    2. Viewing, Reading and Responding (Reading)

    3. Writing

    They are regarded as forms of how language is used in

    natural social contexts.

    The other three outcomes correspond to the knowledge and

    skills essential for effectively using the language:

    4. Cultural understandings

    5. Knowledge of the system of the language

    6. Language learning strategies

    Achieving these outcomes should be demonstrated through the

    use of the language (first three outcomes).
