Our squadron continued to honor Monroes military he-roes by hosting our third Wreaths Across AmericaCeremony. Each of the nine war memorials in Monroewere adorned with large Christmas Wreaths.

The day started with our cadet Honor Guard, our newercadets and the squadron commanders taking anotherpractice run through the formal ceremony that wouldlater be conducted at Veterans Memorial Park. At ap-proximately 10:00hrs an honor team broke off to visit theremote memorial sites across Monroe. Wreaths wereplaced honoring war deceased at Monroes new national

park, site of the Massacre at the River Raisin during the War of 1812, theCivil War, the Spanish American War, and Viet Nam Memorials. All mem-bers reassembled at Veterans Memorial Park at 11:30 to join in the more for-mal ceremony of the day.

At exactly 12:00 noon Lt Col Woodruff opened up our ceremony with Atthis precise moment in every national cemetery in our homeland we joinmany in honoring those who gave their lives for our freedom. In it he honoredMonroes deceased war heroes of each conflict, startingfrom the War of 1812 up to those who just returned home

in past 364 days since our last ceremony. With his com-mand the VFW saluted our heroes with a 21 gun salutefollowed by taps.

The local news papers continued their fantastic cover-age with a preview, Saturday morning front page re-minder in Todays Events, and another great follow uparticle with picture of the event.

Unfortunately our Mayor the Honorable Mark Worrellhad to cancel out his speech due to the cold temperatureand his health conditions.

Our Squadron recently assisted Monroes area Cub and Boy Scouts of the Ru

ning Waters District, by hosting an Aerospace & Aviation Training Day. While thBSA program has an aviation merit badge listed the scouts of the Running WateDistrict have not had the opportunity to take advantage of it. There was no owith the credentials to instruct them.

When CAP offered to host the aerospace & aviation day nearly 200 scoujumped at the opportunity to earn this elusive merit badge. MI-063 assembled presentation stations for the scouts. The Boy Scouts training included aircraaerodynamics, glider assembly, aircraft preflight, aircraft gauge and instrumenttion, DF instruction, and an ELT- DF search. Cub Scout training included buildina Goddard Rocket, CD Hovercrafts, Balsa Gliders, and landing a Lucky Lindy a

plane. As a special treat the Cub Scouts got Astronaut Ice Cream.A select group of Boy Scouts were also working toward the BSA space exploration badge. They rceived instruction and hands on guidance from Capt Jeff Walters the squadron and Group 705 Aerspace Education Officer. A rocketry display was part their training which included the squadrons hipowered rocket. Capt Walters holds the A. Scott Crossfield Aerospace Education Master EducatAward. The scouts completed their training by launching their rockets.

Our squadron members who assisted BSA were presented with a BSmerit patch specifically designed to commemorate the days achievementThe patch is entitled Take to the Air

The entire event was at the request of Running Waters Scout Master ScoGoocher. SM Goocher came to a Monroe Squadron meeting seeking the asistance of Capt Walters. Capt Walters was active in the BSA prior to joininCAP. Their master plan required multiple meetings to align a dates, reviemerit badge requirements, getting permission to use airport facilities athe air space for launching rockets, lining up volunteers from both sides afinally gathering donations and supplies for the AE activities.

Last season ceremony touched bothsenior members so much they both

wanted to return. They both com-mented on what a pleasure it is to

see the Cub & Boy Scouts respectingour flag and recognizing those whodied for it.

After an opening ceremony thescouts slowly marched to the openfire pit holding a torn or frayed flagclose to the chest and deposited it inthe open flame. This season wasmade even more special when CadetChavis stirred all those present with a

To All, Happy New Year !

It only seems like last week I was writing this same article, the start of the new year already. I guethey are correct, time does fly when you are having fun! In fact we are having so much fun the Comanders article was moved from page two to page three! Thats OK, the further back my article is more the squadron is doing. My goal is to be the last article in a long news letter.

During this time of year many things come to mind and the first is safety. Some times in CAP we heabout safety so much I think we desensitize ourselves. That is until we end up with a nail in our wrist, obroken limb because we stood on a chair instead of a ladder or even stitches because we were carelewith a sharp instrument. I really enjoy seeing everyone on Thursday nights so please stay healthy a(hear is that word again) safe.

After safety comes the year end reports that Wing requires and the submission of the Of The Yeawards. The award process is the most difficult. How do I select a single person for an award when eveone does so much to make this squadron a success? You are all the best and I would like you to accemy sincere appreciation for all that you do for the squadron and for each other. With that I will end this wa heartfelt Thank You

Over the past few years our squadron has worked on many details to support our local veterans organitions. Each and every time our squadron presence has been requested members have stepped up to hout. Be it serving as an Honor Guard at an 1812 Ceremony, or assisting the American Legion in the planing of the ceremonial dedication of the Matt Urban Memorial and then serving as Color Guard for the

tual ceremony, or when our presence was requested to march in the Memorial Day Parade, and even asisting the Am Vets Adopt a US Soldier day in Monroe.

Recently Commander Lt Col Woodruff and Deputy Commander Capt Jondro have been asked to seon an the advisory board of Monroe Vets Inc. Monroe Vets Inc. is a local organization that supports homless veterans in the area. The association at this time is experiencing serious financial and operating prolems and are in search people to serve on a new board of directors. Lt Col Woodruff has been placed the board directors, Capt Jondro is assisting in the design of a new heating system.

Ever hear the phrase CAP is Americas best kept secret, not in Monroe you dont. Thanks You, to eryone who has assisted in any of the past events mentioned above, and all others not mentioned, you athe reason why we have the great working relationship with Monroes military groups! If you havent volteered please consider to do so in the future.

On December 5th 1Lt CarlSweeney and 1Lt DougThoma joined into helpOperation Good Cheer.Good Cheer collects, wraps, and delivers gifts to childrenthat have been separatedfrom their parents. Our deliv-ering dual flew into Pontiac

joining approximately 100other aircraft to the always

busy airport. There were 4CAP airplanes that helped outat this self funded event. Withall these planes on site LtSweeney compared this to theOshkosh air show. He saidThe tower operated like Osh-kosh, once you announcedyour tail number, you had nofurther radio response, you

    just followed the direction of

the tower. At times they wereoperating two parallel runwayswith two tower controllers andthree ground controllers.

Once parked they were givenseveral choices for their deliverydestinations. Once a load wasselected they were given a loadnumber to place in the aircraftwindow that correspond with theload that a truck was unloading.

To load up they took every-thing not essential out of the air-craft, slid the seats up to their

flying position. Their loadcomplete Lt Sweeney sawa sled that everyone wasignoring, with one morelook inside he found asmall opening in the centerof the fuselage ceiling. Itwas carefully slid in placeand now were fully loaded.

The took off towardsSaginaw at 12:00 noon.,and returned back to Mon-roe Custer at 13:50

Lt Sweeney commented I am looking forward to do-ing it again. Anyone whoenjoys something a littledifferent, and enjoys achallenge may want toconsider it next season, itwas a great experience!

Thanks Lt Thoma for thepictures, they certainlyhelp tell the story.

all 11 training modules were cov-ered to include such subjects asMission Pilot Duties, Air/Groundteam coordination, ELT detectionand aircraft inspection. Each con-sisted of approximately one hourof formal classroom presentationfollowed by a written test. Stu-dents now move on to Advanced

In December, five SeniorMembers completed thefamiliarization and prepara-tory training phase requiredfor Mission Pilot qualification. The training program began inOctober with individual subjectpresented as a part of eachweekly squadron meeting. In

Cadets C/2Lt Walters, C/SMS Lawrence, C/TSgt Gulley, C/SS Nicholson, and C/SSgt Bellman, loadeinto the squadron van at 6:15 for the 137 mile field trip to the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. The field trip was reward for the cadets recent National Aerospace Excellence Award.

Upon arrival at the Air Zoo they were greeted by a WWII B-17 veteran pilot. He was shot down anheld prisoner for by the Germans. He is one of the museum volunteers that share their aviation knowedge with the public. He told the group about his WWII experiences and shared his knowledge of whato make sure to see while at the museum. The Air Zoo also includes the WWII Naval Aviation Hange

and the Michigan Space Science Center.Aircraft on display range from, starting early aviation models to the F-14 Tomcat and the SR-71. It

impossible to take everything in on one trip. The group especially enjoyed the zoos featured hands odisplays. Equipment included full motion flight simulators, space ball, space walk, Montgolfier balloorace, and a Space Shuttle simulator. The space shuttle is a 3d tour ride to and returning back fromspace. All the cadets had the opportunity to get their picture taken in a jet cockpit, in the space capsuleand standing in front of large murals.

It was a long but wonderful day ending back at Monroe Custer at 16:00hrs. Many thanks to SeniorCapt Jeff Walters, and Lieutenants Nicholas Roberty and Douglas Thoma

monyThe cadet honor guard that pre-

formed the wreath laying ceremonyagain impressed those present atfor the ceremony. Comments aboutthe precision of the detail and theirsincerity flowed from many there.

Walters, C/SMS David Lawrence, C/SMSgt Alex-andria Chavis, C/TSgt Jason Gulley, C/SSgtGeorge Bellman, and C/SSgt Brit Nicholson thatcomprised the detail. You sincerely deserve anyand all kudos thats passed out. There have beenmany very cold days and evenings of practice in-volved it getting this ceremony to where it is now.

This years success also serves as a challengefor the newer cadets. Many of the cadets that pre-formed this years ceremony might not be herenext season. We can only hope you will carry onthe tradition these cadets started !

Cadets Win AEX AwardCongratulation to our cadets that were awardethe National Aerospace Education ExcellenAward. The cadets completed their six requirments to win this award in only four months. Ntional allows 12 months to fulfill these requirments. Their projects included study sessions othe space shuttle, CD hovercrafts, and air rocets. In Keeping With Tradition !In Keeping With Tradition !In Keeping With Tradition !In Keeping With Tradition !

Because the food and service was so good last year, the Monroe Composite Squadron againheld its annual Christmas Party for seniors at the Lone Star Steakhouse in Dundee. As with lastyear, two members of the squadron were selected by their peers to be honored for their service toCAP. They would be the second group to receive squadron shirts, challenge coins, and their ownCall Sign No amount of money can purchase these shirts, only by service above and beyondwill a member be presented this honor.

The process to honor these two men started in January 2009 and by a nomination vote and sug-

gested call signs the winners were decided. Military tradition dictates that calls signs areawarded to an individual usually by the commanding Officer and are normally used for radio com-munications.

Not for any particular reason or in any particular order, the first mem-ber to receive squadron honors this year was Captain Jeff Walters, callsign Rocketman His call sign selection was easy and almost unani-mous. Captain Walters is an avid builder and launcher of rockets, somewell over ten feet tall. Capt Walters has received national recognition for hisFlight for a Cure breast cancer rocket. He holds the CAP prestigious A

Scott Crossfield Aerospace Education Master Educator Award. CaptainWalters is also the leader of the Squadrons Rocketry Program and his ex-pertise is well known throughout the Wing.

The second awarded call sign was much more difficult. As votes and sug-gestions came pouring in, none were the same. The call sign awarded toCaptain Jay Jondro was among nine suggested. Captain Jondro is notonly the Squadron Public Affairs, he is the Group 705 PAO and AssistantWing PAO. Capt Jondro has received the Wing and Regional PAO of theYear Award and has been presented a National Major Howell Balsem PAOaward. When not writing articles for publication he is either taking aerial

pictures or training the squadron members to become more proficient inaerial photography. For these reasons, Snapshotjust seemed to fit.

As in the past by accepting these squadron shirts they have accepted to become a part of thecommittee to select new members and to set up any by laws of this select group. Congratulationsto Rocketman and Snapshotand thank you for all the hard work you put into making the Mon-roe Composite Squadron so successful.

    Squadron Conducts

    Communication Drill

Communications Officer 1Lt George Low put the squadronand it radio equipment to the test this past quarter with a cleverand rigorous communications drill. The drill was designed totest signal strength of our radio equipment as well as cell phonesignal strength in remote areas of our county, and to be pre-pared If a real time emergency does occur. In addition to thedrills plan of 1 mile comm. check ins, each detail was instructedto check in when a tower of any type was sighted. At eachcheck point radio strength and cell phone strength by barswas recorded. Each detail made sure they left with at least 2different cell phones service providers to monitor the differ-ences between companies. The great number of check inpoints was designed to give those senior and cadet membersthat need radio time extra opportunities to train.

The mission started at squadron headquarters with one detailin the squadron van to head southwest while another would head northwest. 1Lt Low had plottedingenious routes with countless turns that required each team to have a driver, navigator, commu-nicator, and additional spotters.

The results of the test proved our communication system operated flawlessly even to the farthestboundaries of our county, we found and registered numerous radio towers we did not know werein our area, the cadets got a lot of air time, and we now know that if an emergency really does oc-cur we have positive airwave communication to ground teams along these paths.

Not only did the drill accomplish its intended purpose but it prove to be a fun night for all in thesquadron. Similar drills are being planned, after all we have many other directions to test out.
