Our squadron continued to honor Monroesmilitary heroes by hosting Monroes fourthWreaths Across America Ceremony. Eachof the nine war memorials in Monroe wereadorned with a large Christmas Wreath.

This years event took on a special meaningwhen the parents of recently deceased ArmyRanger PFC Eric Hario attended the ceremony.PFC Hario was killed in Afghanistan last year.In the Monroe Evening News interview Mrs.

Hario said, It has been a tough week. It was Erics birthday Thursday. Hewould have been 21.

Our Ceremonial Flight once again did a fantastic job after many chillingpractice sessions. This years CF was a combination of senior and cadetmembers. Each memorial has a unique walkway that requires intricate and

different movements. This year the Willow Run Squadron joined in as theirCadet Color Guard posted the colors to start the ceremony.

As recognition for the ceremony grows in the community we are also get-ting similar support from local commerce and charitableorganizations. Julie Rhinehardt from the American RedCross spent hours getting food and drink donations andprinting up advertisement brochures. The Red Crossagain supplied their emergency response staff to servethe donated snacks. The Monroe Transit bus companyprovided their historically painted bus to transport us tothe remote sights included in our ceremony.

The ceremonial portion of the day started at approxi-mately 10:00hrs as our squadron boarded the bus to visitthe remote memorial sites across Monroe. Wreaths wereplaced honoring war deceased at Monroes NationalPark, the sight of the of the Massacre at the River Raisinduring the War of 1812, the Civil War, and the Spanish

American War. At 11:00 hours our Squadron joinedmembers of Monroes Vietnam Vets Post and their ColorGuard at the Heck Park Memorial for a formal wreathplacement.

All members then reassembled at Veterans Memorial Park at 11:30am to participate in the largestceremony of the day.

At exactly 12:00 noon Commander Jay Jondro opened up our ceremony with At this precise mo-ment in every national cemetery in our homeland we join many in honoring those who gave theirlives for our freedom. Chaplain Crabtree then lead all in an opening prayer for our fallen heroes andtheir families. Monroe Mayor Robert Clark then stepped to the podium and thanked all of Monroesveterans for their service to our country. Following a command our Cadet Honor Guard then placedwreaths at the Korean War, WWI, WWII, Desert Storm, and the ongoing War on Terror Monuments.Following the cadets perfectly preformed ceremony, Deputy Commander Lane presented the cere-

monies key address. In it he honored Monroes deceased war heroes of each conflict, starting fromthe War of 1812 up to those who just returned home in the past 364 days since our last ceremony. With his command the VFW Ceremonial Guard of Monroe Post 1138 saluted our heroes with a 21gun salute followed by taps.

The local news papers continued their fantastic coverage with a preview, Saturday morning frontpage reminder in Todays Events, and front page coverage with a picture of the event.

    At Matt Urban Memorial

It seems like ever since members of our squadron and the American Legion Post #40 got togetherto plan the dedication ceremony of the Matt Urban Memorial, our squadron and their Post havebeen intertwined. Our cadets served as the Color Guard for the dedication ceremony. In the pastyear we have received request from the American Legion Post asking for help to police the grounds

around the memorial. Veterans Park has many trees and therealways seems to be limbs, stick, leaves, and some human rub-bish collecting and dishonoring the monument.

Considering our efforts in the past year it was no surprisewhen MI-063 was called on again to serve as Color Guard atthe memorials first year anniversary. The ceremony was notattended by many people which made it feel more heartfelt. There was a rededication speech, a prayer, and we replacedthe main flag. The Monroe Evening News did run the adjacent1/4 page picture with a news brief.

The work is an honor when you consider that Matt Urban is aCongressional Medal of Honor recipient. He was woundedseven different times.Picture Courtesy of the Monroe Evening

Lieutenant Doug Thoma: Lt Thomas history in CAP started in the 1950s

when he served as a cadet. He left MI-063 to serve our country in the USAF.He returned to CAP when his son joined our squadron. He recently rejoinedbringing with him his considerable knowledge base and a love of aviation. Heis more than willing to share this info with our cadets. It is no wonder heserves as our History Officer. Lt Thomas service to our squadron has in-cluded countless hours utilizing his artistic skills. He painted our search andrescue float. He has painted many signs inside and outside of our squadronheadquarters. He has even labeled and painted areas for our safety sake. Unfortunately, I must start the new year off with a sad story. Everyone for miles around is well

aware of the missing brothers from the Morenci area. You might not be aware that our squadronwas sought out to assist in the initial search for these young boys. Lt Lows son is a member of theMorenci Police Department and talked to him about utilizing our capabilities to assist in the search. When Lt Low called me I immediately called Wing Commander Leo Burke for advice and his permis-sion to activate. Wisely he asked for a call from the Morenci authorities before activating our squad-ron and offering Wing assistance. It turned out that the area response was so great that they did notneed additional ground team manpower.

That whole day I could not shake the returning memories of our search for Nevaeh Bucanan. Oursquadron did respond to that 02:00 call from the Monroe County Sheriffs Department. MI-063 mem-bers searched area apartment complexs, school yards, storm drainage lines, and dumpsters. Thesearch did not end until weeks later when her body was found in a shallow grave. The memory ofthe entire search is sad but the thought that kept returning to me was how unprepared I was for thistype of mission. I have the lowest GTM ranking but like most of us I have spent the majority of mytraining time learning air ops. Getting sign offs is one things but practical experience is another. Onthis search Cadet Stevenson help me with essential tips as to what I should be looking for. The nextmorning I kept thinking what if I had missed something or messed up some evidence.

At our squadron meeting that week I talked to those in attendance about the call from Morenci. Iasked the squadron to get a sign up list of those interested in assisting if this situation came aroundagain. I also asked for a Ground Team training schedule for those interested so that MI-063 wouldbe properly prepared in the future. I was tickled to see all present committed to train. Who as a par-ent would refuse assisting in this type of mission?

Major Energizer Malley as always kicked into high gear, created and implemented a GT trainingschedule that has us working hard each meeting. I would ask those of MI-063 that have missedmeeting (s) because of the holidays to please join us ASAP. We will make sure whatever trainingyou have missed will be offered and made available to you. Lets get signed off together. Lets makesure we all are 100% willing and able to aid if the need arises!

Annual Christmas PartyAnnual Christmas PartyAnnual Christmas Party

This years squadron Christmas party for seniors returned to McGeadys Pub in downtownMonroe. We had the entire second level to ourselves which allowed everyone to walk around, and socialize with our squadron mates and their significant others. This made for a special eve-ning. Considering how much time we spend together very few of us are aware of our membershome life. At one time we talked about having three social nights a year, one prior to the missiontraining season, one after the mission season and CN is done, and finally the Christmas Party.Hopefully in the future we can really have more of these types of evenings.

A big Huh Rah to SM Lucy Cosgrove who did a great job making all the arrangements. It wasa great time for all who attended.

    From the Cadet Commander:

Hello Readers,Second Lieutenant Chavis here, reporting about the end of 2010.

First I'd like to acknowledge all of the promotions we've had at the end of the year.Adam Audet toCadet Senior Airman, Travis VanDeCasteele to Cadet Senior Airman, John Parkerto Cadet Techni-cal Sergeant, Jessica DeAngelo to Cadet Senior Master Sergeant, Brit Nicholson to Cadet ChiefMaster Sergeant, and Jason Gulley to Chief Master Sergeant as well. Now one thing that we have participated in December was the Wreaths around America. The MonroeComposite Squadron Cadets laid wreaths around Monroe at all the War Memorials. Also, working

with the local VFW, participated in their ceremony at Heck Parks Vietnam Memorial. It was a wonder-ful feeling of importance with all of the veterans who served our great nation watching the future sol-diers present a wreath of remembrance. What a prideful day for our cadets.

Also around the first Sunday of December, Civil Air Patrol has a day known as Civil Air Patrol Sab-bath. A day to share with your local parish your service to America. One of our cadets (JessicaDeAngelo) participated, with our own Chaplin and Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, Pastor Crab-tree, whom also wore his Civil Air Patrol Uniform. During his church service he explained his job atthe Monroe Composite Squadron, being our Character Development/Moral Leadership Officer. One thing the Squadron can look forward to is the cadets new look on physical fitness, led by mydeputy commanderC/TSgt John Parker. The whole month of January, we are promoting the NewYears Resolution of getting fit and creating good exercise habits to take with them throughout life.

Each meeting the cadets start by warming up, stretching, and we go on a squadron mile run. Afterthat, each week we focus on a different part of the body. First with the upper body, lower body, core, and stamina. Each week going back to our last goals looking for improvement and giving tips on howto get better. By setting new goals each week, we are trying to improve the cadets strength levelsand promote teamwork with the squadron, we're looking forward to the results that will come from allthis hard work.

CAP units must be able to respond to any SAR mission that is assigned. Inorder to complete these mission tasks, Squadron members musthave necessary Mission skill qualifications. As a part of the annual Capability

Analysis, the Squadron staff identified that the unit has a need to expand ourGround Team capability by qualifying more members as Ground Team mem-bers. Along with this, those members that are already qualified are in need of

refresher training. With this in mind, Major Brian Malley (ES training Officer), working with theCommand Staff, created a Squadron Ground Team Training Academy. A curriculum was identi-fied, a training schedule was created and instructors were assigned. The Academy kicked off onDec 23, 2010 and will continue through early Spring ending with participation in training exercises.

Squadron Commander Jay Jordro says: "This is an ambitious effort that will enhance the Squad-ron's ability to react to CAP mission needs." The Academy meets every Thursday at 1800 at theSquadron Headquarters with Ground Team 3. Training is presented by Squadron Senior mem-bers that already hold Ground Team qualifications. Deputy Commander Greg Lane mentioned:"The training offers some of the best classes I've attended in my Squadron experience. With 33classes in the curriculum, we've got a lot to accomplish." The training covers necessary skillsneeded to participate as a search team member to include First Aid, how to identify a distress bea-con and search clues along with many other important training classes. Major Malley states: "Oncewe complete Ground Team 3, we can move onto Ground team 2 training." The last phase of the

Academy will be individual one-on-one sessions covering classes that members were unable toattend.

Operation Good Cheer is operated by Child and Family Ser-vices of Michigan. On Dec. 4, 2010 over 100 aircraft gathered atPontiac International Airport to distribute gifts around the statefor children that are displaced from their parents. Mark Hass and

I took the Gippsland N470CP at ARB with the seats removedfor extra room. Because of the large amount of air traffic, the air-craft are assigned arrival time slots, ours was 07:48. We en-tered the PTK airspace within 15 seconds of our arrival slot time.

Af ter report ing in at Pentastar hangar, wepicked a destination on the criteria that we had a lot of cargospace, so we picked Saginaw because there was a lot of pre-sents going there and a lot of bulky items that won't fit in a nor-mal aircraft , including 7 bicycles! We then

filed our departure clearance with FAA which was located right in the hangar. After loading , we got in line to taxi for take off With a dozen plus aircraft

in line to take off, once you check in with clearance delivery, allcommunications are one way from the controlling agency and you just monitor andfollow directions. Upon arrival we were met by crews of 10-15 people to helpunload. Then it was return to PTK for a second load (Flint for us).

Mark Hass and I had a great time and a great sense of the giving of theChristmas spirit! Mark and I shared expenses as it was not a funded mission. I'msure a lot of children had a lot better Christmas than they would have with outthe dedicated volunteers from Child and Family Services, and all of the peoplewho gave a lot quality gifts!
