Monroe to Host SAR/DRMonroe to Host SAR/DR

14/15 May 2008 the Monroe Composite Squadron will host a state wide Search andRescue Exercise. The offer to host this mission was sent to Captain Gus Gettas after aJanuary meeting when a unanimous vote was cast by members present. Monroe is be-coming very active in hosting state events. In the last couple years we have opened ourdoors to the SAR/Competition and Operation Safeguard.

Since then Thursday meetings have been filled with planning discussions to insure this

will be a successful event. At the 27th meeting night Lt Col Woodruff passed outSAREX/DREX Planning guides from Michigan Wing. The guide was labeled Aguide for the Project Officer, Logistic Section, and the Host Unit. The guide was devel-oped in response to MIWG SAREX after action reports and member feedback. It fea-tures a check list and timelines for host squadrons to follow starting 12 months in ad-vance to the exercise end day. Our main job as host unit is to assist the PO & LSC inthe planning & set up phase, and then support the LSC during and after the actual exer-cise. We do need LOTS of help in Logistics and Lt Howard would like to hear fromany one interested in assisting him.

Easter dinner is over and everyone has gone. The house is so quiet it is almost eerie. The quiet does however lead tthinking and I have been recalling this past quarter.

There have been many changes, some good and some not so good. One of the not-so-good was the transfer of Lt JeWalters to the Florida Wing. Lt Walters was the Deputy Squadron Commander for Cadets and the AerospacRocketry Officer. His vast knowledge and his exceptional people skills helped both the Cadets and Senior programmove in a positive direction. Lt Walters has been and will continue to be missed by all.

On the good news side, as of this writing the Monroe Squadron is in line to receive its first CAP aircraft. (Some you may remember another airplane that was in here a few years ago. This aircraft belonged to the Great Lakes Regioand was stationed here temporarily, not assigned to the squadron.) Planners are hoping to have the aircraft delivered the unit by 15 April, 2008.

I am extremely happy to announce that the author of this news letter, Lt Jay Jondro, was nominated for and selecteas the Great Lakes Region Public Affairs Officer of the Year. Lt Jondro was nominated by the Squadron for the Michgan Wing PAO of the year award. Because of his excellent work and dedication to promoting Civil Air Patrol, Lt Jondro was nominated by Michigan Wing for the Great Lakes Region PAO of the Year award. Congratulation to Lt Jodroo for a job well done.

Our new Administration Officer has requested that we put together a Cadet Welcome Aboard package. We havstarted this project several times in the past but it always seems to stall. To accomplish this, we need your help. As necadets and parents of new cadets at one time, what were your concerns.? Did you know where to go online for cadeinformation and required online testing? Was their paperwork you needed that you had a hard time getting? Please senany suggestions or ideas to SM Mike Krauss (Admin Officer) [email protected] or directly to me at [email protected]. Anything you can do to help us put together this package for future Cadets and their parenwill be greatly appreciated.

Monroe Squadron Host Group SAR/DRMonroe Squadron Host Group SAR/DRMonroe Squadron Host Group SAR/DR15th March 2008 The Monroe Composite Squadron hosted a Group SAR/DR. Monroe was joined by members othe Willow Run Squadron. All areas of Emergency Training excluding Ground Team was utilized in this exercise.

TheAir Division got off to a slight delay when an early morning frost covered the aircraft. The late morning sun puquick end to that safety concern but we lost some valuable time. This was schedule for a one day event with two aicrews rotating in search of a visual and then an ELT target. In each event the final aircrew was to lead a Communication Team to retrieve the target via radio. The visual target is now a Monroe Squadron possession, it is an actual sizcut out of a Cessna 172. It was made from 3 painters tarps and is white with red trim. It can be assembled or spreaout in any manner to simulate any style of crash landing. Thanks to 1Lt Jay Jondro for his work and donation of thitarget. TheAir to Comm. drill went off with out a hitch, aircrews got much needed practice leading a surface vehiclto a target. Unfortunately the ELT portion of the day had to be scrapped for lack of time.

The Communication Teamwas busy all day handling all calls from the Air and remote Comm. Teams in autos.

Cadets assisted in all areas of communications.

During the weeks of Lent the local Knightsof Columbus Council #1266 runs a Fish Fryfor charitable causes. The Knights requestedas much Cadet help we could provide. Itseemed only right to make this effort to assistthem especially after they had just made a gen-erous donation to our local Wreathes AcrossAmerica program. Three squadron cadetsstepped forward and volunteered, CadetsMSgrt Ryan Graczyk, M/Sgrt Camille Walters,

and Airman Gordon Magoon. In fact CadetMagoon made every one of the fries. Theirwork ethic and manners caught the attentionof ALL the K of C volunteers. Attends National Legislative Day in Washington DC

C/CMSgt Walters returned recently from Washington DC were she assistedMichigan Wing Staff in presenting CAPs Annual Report to the House Repre-sentatives and Senators form our State. Cadet Walters was an aide to ColonelMichael Saile our Wing Commander.

Cadet Walters first applied for this position in November of 2007. The field was first narrowed to

eleven cadets, then in December an interview by the selection committee would make the final cut tosix. The dates for the trip were 27 Feb. to 2 March. Cadet Walters duties were to assist Wing Staff indelivering CAPs annual report and to answer questions presented by the congressmen or their aides. She found the trip also helped her understand our government process better.

The evenings and off time provided an excellent opportunity for site seeing of the capital. She wasable to see many government buildings, and memorials. Upon return she commented WashingtonDC was amazing and it is something I will never forget.

Commander Mark Woodruff andDeputy Commander Jay Jondrorecently visited the MonroeCounty Emergency ManagementDivisions new quarters. The 11March visit was the invitation ofacting Director Ms. GlendaWhite. Lt Jondro had contactedher concerning his Crisis Com-munications Plan and the invite

followed. The new building islocated directly behind the oldcomplex but that is where anyand all similarities stop. TheEMD shares the complex spaceequally with the Emergency Dis-patch Center, although they haveseparate and distinct securitycontrols.

The EMD features an Emer-gency Control Center thatwould remind anyone of aNASA control center. Eachstation is dedicated to an emer-gency service group. Each sitehas interactive computers andcommunication capabilities. The entire staff has view ofoverhead screens to monitor

the emergency as it progresses. There are a few stations open, hopefully to be used by CAP.Adjacent to the CC is theWarning Center which controlsall the warning alarms in thecounty. The Media Room isseparated from emergency ar-eas for obvious reasons.

A tour of the 911 DispatchCenter followed and was foundto be equally state of the art. Itis staffed 24/7, 365 days a yearwith up to 8 stations. OverheadTV monitors run constantly tobe utilized if an emergencybroadcast needs to be moni-tored.

    Before leaving the Command

Staff was offered the opportu-nity to observe a training ses-sion 9 April.. This is an oppor-tunity to see the complex run-ning at full potential. More de-tails to follow.

Recently it was announce that our squadron was soon to receive ourown aircraft. Since then everyone has been licking their chops in

anticipation. The talk around the coffee pot has been nothing shortof well fly the wings off it. The mystery has been where theplane would come from. All types of ideas and possibilities havecome along from our pilots, but all were pure educated guesses. Then out of left field come a hay maker that caught everyone offguard. We are getting a plane from south of the border, YES,OHIO. As of this writing we are not sure what is taking so longbut the word out there is they are having a hard time getting theBuckeyes off the tail. We are not sure but hope they mean decals.Recently a pair of our photographers snuck south, to the airport, totake a quick shot so we could see what we are getting. Unfortunately

they didnt label which one of them was ours.

The Regions Gibson Air-van normally based in Wis-consin is in Michigan. Statepilots are flocking to it par-tially out of curiosity but witha definite interest in gettingflight certified. Monroe pilotsLts Chris Jones and Carl

    Sweeney have started towardcertification.

The plane is definitely thelargest in CAPs fleet it seatssix. However at last weeksmeeting we were told the seat-ing is very cramped expect tohold your elbows in.

The Gippsland has drawn alot of attention for its aerialimaging system. TheAirborne

    Real-time Cueing Hyper-spectral Enhanced Recon-naissance also is known bythe acronym =ARCHER .

According to the US Govement it is the most sophisticatunclassified imaging systeavailable. ARCHER can scfor abnormalities, or fchanges in previously recordspectral images. It has dirapplications for search and rcue, counter drug, disaster reliimpact assessment, and homland security. ARCHER is a dtime non-invasive technologycan not detect objects at nigunderwater, under dense covunderground, under snow, inside a building. The systeuses a special camera facidown through a quartz portal

The call chain used by the squadron is officiallydead. With Wings announcement of newEmergency Services contact procedures acrossthe state MI-063 immediately kicked into highgear. To insure that all the squadrons ES quali-fied personnel will be contacted quickly and re-peatedly it was decided that national call systemswould be researched. One of the first systems

researched was called 911 Services althoughtheir system did everything required the$,1000.00 per month charge was a little to steep.Upon further research an ideal system Call EmAll was found. For $ 7.50 per month we nowhave unlimited monthly messaging in two min-ute blocks, for up to 25 members. The systemhas been loaded and successfully used threetimes to date. If you have not gotten the testpaging messages your name obviously is notincluded in the ES contact list. To be added tothe service you must contact Lt. Colonel Wood-ruff for clearance.

Please Note: Squadron members voted to pay$ 10.00 each to offset the expense of this ser-vice. If you have not paid for your pledge pleasemake sure to visit the Finance Officer.
