Transcript of Tríptic. Gegants del Pi - Giants of Pi - Géants du Pi (Barcelona - Catalunya)

The Gegants del Pi, which belong to the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi (Barcelona), are the one of the oldest and most important
figures in the festive imagery of the Catalan capital. We find their first written references in 1601, through their participation in
the festivities of the canonization of Sant Raimon of Penyafort.
The Gegantons del Pi date from 1780 when they came out to support their big brothers, the Gegants del Pi, and participated in
festivities in the houses with their small size.
Later, looking at the books of the church we found expense reports for their conservation, which shows the will for centuries to
keep them in good condition, and how these figures were respected by the inhabitants of the city of Barcelona. But, gradually,
between the prohibitions and difficulty of wearing them (it is said that they were the highest and heaviest of Catalonia) people
decided that they no longer will participate in the festivities from 1870 onwards.
In 1951 they were found in the steeple of the Basilica the four heads, their hands and some clothes. A commission was created
to rehabilitate them and in June 12, 1960, they finally emerged into the streets in a big party and participate without interruption
at the festivities and celebrations of Our Lady of La Mercè, Corpus Christi, Santa Eulàlia, Sant Josep Oriol and festivals of many
areas of Barcelona, towns and villages in Catalonia and abroad where they are called (Milan, Bordeaux, Lille, Maastricht, Paris
and Japan).
The entity also has a significant impact on the recovery of ancient festive imagery of the city, especially two historical beasts: the
solemn Lion of Barcelona and the wild Mulassa of Barcelona, known since the fifteenth century. In 1995 it was introduced the
little giant Perot lo Lladre, which is designed for children, in memory of a famous thief of the neighborhood of Pi. They are
accompanied by a couple of big heads and the music group of Pi, playing the drum and the bombard.
