Los miércoles, la plaza Virgen de la Peña muestra su cara más fl amenca. El cuadro de baile Azabache despliega sobre el escenario lo mejor de la tradición andaluza en este campo en una exhibición gratuita que enamora a vecinos y visitantes.

Every Wedesday, the Plaza Virgen de la Peña is full of the sounds of fl amenco. The dance group Azabache presents on stage, the best of the Andalucian tradition in this fi eld. The show is free and is enormously popular with residents and visitors.

José Luis González Vera nació en Antequera en 1964. Es doctor en Filología Hispánica, profesor, investigador, escritor de poemas, relatos y artículos periodísticos. También ha realizado dos cortometrajes. Incansable observador de la vida, según reza su biografía, “emite juicios sobre las cosas más triviales mientras se emborracha con sus amigos”. El sabor de la madera es su primera novela.

José Luis González Vera was born in Antequera in 1964. He is a doctor of Hispanic philology, teacher, investigator, poet, writer of history and journalistic articles. He has also completed two short films A tireless observer of life , according to his biography he “expresses judgements on the most trivial things whilst getting drunk with his friends”. The taste of Wood is his first novel.

EL SABOR DE LA MADERA

Este es el leiv motiv que recorre toda la obra. ¿A qué sabrá la madera? Porque la madera no es sólo eso. El sabor de la madera es el del divorcio, el del despido, el de la locura voluntaria e inducida, el de la barra de prostíbulo, el de la estafa, el de la soledad mitigada por una pantalla de ordenador, y sobre todo el del humor. El protagonista de la obra saborea la madera provocando la carcajada cruel de un público que se reconoce precisamente en aquello que es objeto de burla.

This is the leitmotiv that runs througout the work. And what does the wood know? Because the wood, is not only wood. The fl avour of the wood is that of divorce, dismissal, voluntary and induced madness, the brothal bar, cheating, loneliness mitigated by a computer screen, and especially humour. The work’s protagonist relishes the wood, provoking the cruel laughter of an audience that recognises precisely what is an object of ridicule.

Juanjo Macías y Paz de Alarcón son los nombres que se esconden tras el proyecto teatral ‘La butaca roja’, una compañía que llega a Mijas para presentar su particular visión del cabaret. ‘Dudual News’, la obra que pondrán en escena, es una versión diferente de los informativos del día.

Altas dosis de improvisación, música, canciones interpretadas en directo y, sobre todo, mucho humor son los ingredientes de este explosivo cóctel, una mezcla con la que ‘La butaca roja’ pretende que nos tomemos a risa las malas noticias que nos acechan a diario.

Juanjo Macías and Paz de Alarcón are the names that are hidden behind the theatre project ‘La butaca roja’, a company that comes to Mijas to present their particular vision of of cabaret. ‘Dudual News’, the play they will put on stage, is a different version from the informative ones of the day.

Large doses of improvisation, music, live interpreted songs, and a lot of humour are the ingredients of this explosive cocktail, a mixture for the ‘La butaca roja’ which makes us laugh at the bad news we see every day.

El grupo de títeres ‘La gotera de Lazotea’ llega al Teatro Las Lagunas con su espectáculo ‘Viento pequeño’, una obra en la que el protagonista de la historia, un viento pequeño, quiere convertirse en un viento importante, algo para lo que emprenderá un importante viaje.

Bajo el lema ‘el artista busca al Creador de toda belleza’ llega a la Casa Museo de Mijas una exposición que tiene como protagonista al arte cristiano. La muestra, de carácter colectivo, cuenta con la participación de una veintena de artistas malagueñas inspirados por esta temática. La exposición estará abierta al público hasta el próximo uno de marzo.

Under the banner ‘the artist looks for the creator of all beauty’ comes this new exhibition at the Mijas Folk Museum. An exhibition that is like a protagonist for Christian Art. The works, of a collective character, include over twenty Malagueñan artists, inspired by this subject matter. The display is open to the public until the 1st of March.

Las tablas del Teatro Las Lagunas se preparan para acoger a la Hutchesons’ Grammar School Band, una formación escocesa que estará de gira por Andalucía en este 2010. La banda, dirigida desde hace más de 10 años por Joanne Freeland, interpretará un variado repertorio, con piezas de musicales, de películas y también composiciones originales.

The Las Lagunas Theatre stage are preparing themselves for the arrival of the Hutchesons Grammar School Band, a scottish group that are touring Andalucia in 2010. The band, directed for more than 10 years by Joanne Freeland, interpets a varied repertoire, with pieces from musicals, fi lms and original compositions.

Por bulerías, tangos, alegrías...se va desarrollando el rito que emociona por igual al espectador y al artista: el FLAMENCO, nombre que da título al trabajo que presenta en el Teatro Las Lagunas Antonio de Verónica.

Se trata de un espectáculo vivo y una experiencia intensa en la que se va alternando el baile individual y de grupo, para terminar en una gran fi esta de homenaje al fl amenco.

En febrero, el graffi ti traspasa las

barreras urbanas y llega a la Casa

de la Cultura de Las Lagunas de

la mano de ‘1981 aka D.Darko’.

Bajo el título de ‘Ramifi cándome’,

este joven artista nos muestra

una treintena de obras realizadas

en distintos formatos, pero bajo

el nexo de unión del graffi ti. La

muestra incluye creaciones en

lienzos, maderas, chapas o cartón.

Habrá también rollos de lienzo

pintados enteros a spray, muñecos

hechos con material reciclado y

más de una sorpresa. Como él

mismo dice, “Ramifi cándome es la

oportunidad que me da el graffi ti

de alcanzar otras ramas, como

la pintura, escultura, investigar

materiales...Concibo mi vida como

un árbol en el que a través de los

años van brotando ramas a través

de mis decisiones, acertadas o no,

voy endureciéndome y las ramas

secas dan paso a otras”.

In February graffi ti transcends urban barriers and reaches the Las Lagunas Cultural House at the hands of ‘1981 aka D. Darko’, under the title of ‘branching out’. This young artist shows us some thirty works made in different formats but under the nexus of the union of graffi ti. The exhibition includes canvas, wood, veneer or cardboard. There will also be samples of spray painted canvas, dolls made with recycled materials and a few surprises. As he says himself, “Branching out is the opportunity that graffi ti gives me, like painting, sculpture, the chance to investigate materials..I conceive my life like a tree, in which through the years, sprouts branches like I, through taking decisions which may be right or may be wrong, these brabches will harden and give way to others”.

Manuel Díaz Villalba es conocido en el mundo del graffi ti como ‘1981 aka D.Darko’. Empezó a sentir pasión por este arte urbano en 1998, infl uenciado por las pintadas que veía en las vías del tren cuando se desplazaba en el cercanías a Málaga.

La explosión de colores y de formas le impactó de tal forma que junto a otros chicos empezó a dar color a los sitios más apartados de Mijas y Fuengirola. Con el paso de los años, empezó a buscar material, a indagar en las raíces del graffi ti ,su historia, estilos… hasta que la afi ción se fue convirtiendo en una forma de vida.

Reconoce que ha habido épocas en las que se ha planteado no continuar. No obstante, la enfermedad de un familiar le hizo replantearse muchas cosas: “La vida es efímera como el graffi ti. Eso me hizo sentir que debía dejar mi huella en cualquier soporte que tuviera a mi alcance”. Ese momento marca un antes y un después en su carrera. Fue un renacer y justamente en ese momento empezó a fi rmar sus obras con su año de nacimiento.

Hoy por hoy usa diversas técnicas y se adapta al soporte, ya sea un muro, un lugar abandonado, madera, papel, vinilo, ropa o, incluso, piedras. No hay límites para expresar lo que siente.

Manuel Díaz Villalba is known to the world of graffi ti as D.Darko 1981. He began to feel passion for street art in 1998, infl uenced by the graffi ti he saw by the train tracks when he was travelling on cercanias in the vicinity of Malaga.

The explosion of colours and shapes impressed him in such a way that he got together with other boys and gave colours to the most isolated parts of Mijas and Fuengirola. With the passing of years, he began looking for material to investigate into the roots of graffi ti, its history and styles... until this passion for graffi ti became a way of life. He admits

that there have been times in which he did consider whether to continue or not. However, family illness made him rethink many things: “Life is fl eeting like graffi ti. That made me feel that I must leave my mark on whatever medium I had at my disposal”. This moment in time marks a before and after in his career. It was a revival and from this time he began signing his works with his year of birth.

Presently he uses various techniques and bases, be it a wall, an abandoned place, wood, paper, vinyl, clothing, or even stones. There are no limits to expressing what he feels.

Fans of Slot can look forward to the 27th of February at the old abattoir of Mijas pueblo. For the Mijas Slot Club have organised the second test of the second trophy ‘World Car Rally’ for the third Mijas Slot Championship. The event takes place in two phases: from 10.30am there is the infants category and during the afternoon from 4pm there is the adults phase. The test will be a classic rally.

El hipódromo Costa del Sol calienta motores. Después de varios meses de descanso, febrero supone el regreso de las carreras de caballos a la arena mijeña. La primera cita de la temporada será el próximo 21 de febrero, cuando se inaugurará la sesión de invierno, un período que se prolongará hasta el próximo Viernes Santo, dos de abril. Hasta entonces, el recinto turfístico nos ofrecerá seis citas con la competición que, además, estarán cargadas de otros alicientes.

Como ya es habitual, el hipódromo Costa del Sol añadirá a la oferta turfística actividades de ocio para todas las edades. En el caso de los niños, la organización ha previsto para ellos castillos hinchables. Para los amantes de la música, hay espectáculos de baile fl amenco en cada carrera, además de música en vivo y quien quiera aprovechar para hacer compras tendrá también a su disposición un mercadillo artesanal.

La gastronomía también tendrá un protagonismo especial durante las carreras. Como señala la propia organización, existe “una amplia oferta con precios anticrisis” en diferentes establecimientos: Terraza Chill Out ‘Le Terrace’, Barbacoa Argentina, Pizzeria Papa Luigi, Hamburguesería, Bocadillos y Roscas, Restaurante El Caballo,

The Costa del Sol Race Course is warming its’ engines. After several months of rest, February sees the return of Horse racing in the mijeña arena. The first date is February the 21st, when the winter meet will be offically inaugurated, a period that will extend to Good Friday, 2nd of April. There will be six competitive dates that will also be packed with excellent incentives.

As always the Hippodrome will offer leisure time activities for all ages. In respect of children there will be inflatable castles and for music and dance lovers fans there will be Flamenco shows inbetween each race, as well as live music and a craftsmarket.

Gastronomy will also play an important part of the proceedings with establishments offering a variety of dishes to suit all budgets in order to combat the economic crisis. Ideal places to eat include; Terraza Chill out ‘Le Terrace’, Barbacoa Argentina, Pizzaria Papa Luigi, Hamburgerseria, Bocadillos y Roscas and Restauant El Caballo.

Ya lo dice el dicho. De casta le viene al galgo. Y en el caso de Andrés Leoni no puede ser más cierto. Su pasión por la aeronaútica en todas sus manifestaciones comenzó con su abuelo, y desde entonces, tres generaciones han disfrutado de una práctica que muchos entienden como hobby y que otros defi enden como un deporte. A Andrés Leoni, argentino de nacimiento y residente en España desde hace más de 8 años -dos en la Costa del Sol-, le apasiona volar y no pierde oportunidad para practicar lo que para él es ya un modo de vida. Hace vuelo a vela, es decir, planea en una nave sin motor y, además, es el campeón español de aeromodelismo en la categoría de Indoor. El próximo 19 de febrero le espera una cita importante y es que defenderá los colores de nuestro país en el campeonato internacional que se celebra en París.

His passion for aeronautics in all its manifestations started with his grandfather, and since then, three generations have enjoyed a form that many see as a hobby but many others defend as a sport. To Andrés Leoni, Argentinian by birth and resident in Spain for more than 8 years - two of those in the Costa del Sol -, he is passionate about fl ying and never misses an opportunity to practice, what for him, is a way of life. He fl ys with a sail, that is to say he glides a ship without an engine and, furthermore, he is the Spanish champion of indoor fl ight. On February the 19th he will be at an important meeting and will defend the colours of our country in the International Championship to be held in París.

PASIÓN POR LAS ALAS// Andrés Leoni lleva residiendo en la Costa del Sol apróximadamente dos años. Desde entonces, forma parte del Club Alas de Mijas, un colectivo que aúna a todos los amantes del aeromodelismo de la zona. Juntos entrenan y disfrutan de una práctica que tiene cada vez más aceptación en nuestro país y es que, poco a poco, el aeromodelismo empieza a verse como un deporte serio y no sólo como un entretenimiento. En el caso de Andrés, toda su vida gira en torno al vuelo radiocontrolado; compite, vende equipamiento, hace reparaciones...incluso su pareja forma parte de este universo con alas, su mujer es juez de aeromodelismo, la única fémina que en nuestro país se dedica a ello.

La andadura deportiva de A.Leoni comenzó en 2005 y desde entonces todo han sido buenas noticias. Ha sido subcampeón en categoría internacional, ha logrado varios títulos en España y Portugal, así como varios subcampeonatos. Concretamente fue subcampeón en el Abierto Internacional de Bélgica en 2008, ha ganado tres veces en Portugal y es campeón español de vuelo Indoor, un título que ostenta desde hace 4 años de forma consecutiva.

PASSION FOR WINGS. // Andres Leoni has lived on the Costa del Sol for approximately two years. Since then, he has belonged to the Mijas Alas Club, a collective group who are devoted to model aeroplane making. Together they train and enjoy practising in a fi eld that has come to be much more accepted in our country. And little by little, aeromodelling is looking more like a serious sport and not just entertainment. For Andres, his whole life revolves around radio controlled fl ight; comrades, selling equipment, carrying out repairs...even his partner is included in the world of aeromodelling, his wife is a judge of model airplanes and is the only female in the country devoted to this.

This path of sport for A.Leoni began in 2005 and since then everything has been good news. He has been runner-up at international level, has achieved many titles in Spain and Portugal as well as several runner-up positions. Specifi cally, he was second in the International Open of Belgium in 2008, he won three times in Portugal and was Spanish champion in indoor fl ight, a title that he keeps for four consecutive years.

THE COMPETITION IN PARISOn the 19th, 20th and 21st of February Andrés Leoni competes in the fi rst edition of ITOP of París -International Indoor Tournament of Paris-, an international test in which there are 63 pilots from 13 different countries. Leoni will represent the colours of Spain along with other Catalan pilots. The Mijas Wing Sports Club has high expectations and hopes to be within the fi rst 10 qualifi ers, although they realise that the level is hard and countries like Germany will not make it easy at all.

For the time being a good part of the day is dedicated to training, some 24 hours a week, although as the competition dates get nearer it will come to approximately fours hours a day.

In París, he will have to show his skills through several test, the F3P, based on the Acrobatic code of Aresti, and the FGB, an aeromusical form. Good Luck!

Los buenos resultados que está cosechando hasta el momento Andrés Leoni han hecho que goce del patrocinio de uno de los importadores españoles de aeromodelismo más importantes, Roi Import. Gracias a esto, Leoni fi nancia en buena parte los altos precios que supone la adquisición de equipos para competir, unos 14.000 euros en el caso de las modalidades en exterior y unos 1.500 en Indoor. Y es que, según comenta, las ayudas por parte de la Federación de Aeronáutica son bastante escasas, hasta el punto de que, en algunas ocasiones, se ha visto en la obligación de pagar 300 € por una hora en un pabellón cubierto para entrenar.

LA COMPETICIÓN EN PARIS

Los días 19,20 y 21 de febrero Andrés Leoni disputará la primera edición del ITOP de París -International Indoor Tournament of Paris-, una prueba internacional en la que le esperan unos 63 pilotos de 13 países diferentes. Leoni representará los colores de España junto a otros pilotos catalanes. El deportista del Club Alas de Mijas se muestra muy ilusionado y espera estar dentro de los 10 primeros clasifi cados, si bien sabe que el nivel es duro y países como Alemania no se lo pondrán nada fácil.

Por ahora dedica buena parte de su jornada a entrenar, unas 24 horas a la semana, si bien conforme se vaya acercando la fecha llegará a unas cuatro horas diarias.

En París, tendrá que demostrar su pericia con varias pruebas, la F3P, basada en el Código Acrobático de Aresti, y la FGB, una modalidad aeromusical. ¡Buena Suerte!

take place in the Andalucia Park, with animation

and fancy dress contests for varying categories.

There will be a great sense of expectancy in Mijas

Pueblo too! This year the Commission for Holidays

have made a plea for the return of the masked

fancy dress, with an award for the most original.

Of course there will also be varying fancy dress

contests, as in La Cala where the carnavaleros

will meet in the Butibamba Park to enjoy this

competition as well as the ‘batucada’ and an

exhibition of ‘capoeira’.

Concursospara celebrar el Carnaval

Las actividades relacionadas con el Carnaval de Mijas comienzan el 14 de febrero a las 11 horas. Lo harán de manera simultánea en los tres núcleos del municipio. En Las Lagunas, la cita será en el Parque Andalucía, donde habrá animación y concursos de disfraces en diferentes categorías.

En Mijas Pueblo, también habrá mucha expectación. De hechos, este año la Comisión de Fiestas aboga por recuperar la tradición de las Máscaras, con un premio a la más original. Por supuesto, también habrá concurso de disfraces en diferentes categorías, al igual que en La Cala, donde los carnavaleros se reunirán en el parque de la Butibamba, para disfrutar de este certámen, así como de una batucada y una exhibición de capoeira.

El 6 de febrero en el parque Fernán Caballero tendrá lugar un concurso de disfraces organizado por la Asociación Nueva Laguna. Será a partir de las 17 h y aglutinará a los pequeños de 0 a 15 años. Habrá tres premios y se valorará, sobre todo, el que los disfraces estén confeccionados a mano.

Por otra parte, un vecino de Las Lagunas, Isaac Manuel Suárez, organiza un viaje a los Carnavales de Cádiz. La excursión está programada el 13 de febrero, con salida a las cuatro de la tarde, y tiene un precio de 17 euros. El regreso es el domingo 14 a las 7 de la mañana.

On the 6th of February in the Fernán Caballero Park there will be a fancy dress competition organised by the Nueva Laguna Association. It will be from 5pm and it will bring together children from 0 to 15 years of age. There will be three prizes and particular attention will be taken on those costumes which are handmade.

Furthermore, a resident of Las Lagunas, Isaac Manuel Suarez, has organised a trip to the Cadiz Carnival. The excursion is scheduled for February the 13th, departing at 4pm and is priced at 17 euros. The return is sunday at 7am.

El viaje hacia tierras aragonesas parte de Mijas el sábado 20 de febrero. Los jóvenes tendrán siete días por delante para pasarlo en grande. El precio de la excursión es de 395 euros (subvencionado por el Ayuntamiento) e incluye transporte en autobús, 6 noches de alojamiento en el hotel de cuatro estrellas Barceló Jaca (con pensión completa), un total de diez horas de clases de esquí y snow, así como ‘forfaits’ para cinco días y material de alquiler. Si no quieres quedarte sin plaza, llama ya al área de Juventud, en el teléfono 952 52 60 60 o pásate por el Centro de Formación, Empleo y Juventud para formalizar tu inscripción.

The trip to the aragonese area departs from Mijas on Saturday the 20th of February. The youngsters will have seven great days to make the most of. The Pyrenees is once again the destination for the Youth trip, although the Department are going to Aragon instead of Andorra this year. More specifi cally, they are going to the Astun station. The area provides excellent conditions, including 18 tracks and 10 km of ski-ing. Services include a ski school, commercial area and restaurants and ski lifts.
