After a two-hour trip from Pozos, our group of seventeen arrived in the Valenciana district of the city of Guanajuato. We were welcomed into the home of Janet Izzo and Sigfrido Aguilar, which would be our home base for the trip. Their two sons, Tzintzun and Sereno, were traveling as part of our group, working as teaching assistants for our July workshops.

We spent the first two hours exploring and photo-graphing the wondrous collection of plants and ob-jects in the home and garden, then we took off to see a few nearby artisan’s workshops and the famous Valenciana church.

Después de un viaje de dos horas, nuestro grupo de diecisiete personas llego a Valenciana, una colo-nia de la ciudad de Guanajuato. Fuimos recibidos en la casa de Janet Izzo y Sigfrido Aguilar, donde nos quedariamos la noche. Sus hijos, Tzintzun y Sereno, estaban viajando como parte del grupo, trabajando como asistentes en los cursos de Julio.

Pasamos dos horas explorando y fotografiando la maravillosa colección de plantas y objetos magicos que se encontraban en la casa de la familia Aguilar Izzo. Despues salimos a ver a los talleres de diferen-tes artesanos y la famosa inglesia de La Valenciana.

The Templo de San Cayetano and its adjoining convent were built during the rise of the famous silver mine of Guanajuato, La Valenciana. On our walk to the church, we passed the mag-nificent ruins of the old mines on the steep slopes of the moun-tainside. The church is a prime example of Mexico’s unique Churrigueresque style of architecture. Inside the church we photographed the ornate gold altars, the soaring ceilings, and exquisite carved pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries.

El Templo de San Cayetano y su adyacente monasterio fueron contruidos durante la epoca de oro de una de las minas mas fa-mosas de Guanajuato, La Valenciana. Mientras caminamos hacia la inglesia, pasamos viejas y bellas ruinas que se acurrucaban en las laderas de las montanas. La inglesia es un buen ejemplo del estilo Churrigueresco de arquitenctura, que es único en México. Adentro de la inglesia fotografiamos los altares incrustados de oro, las cúpulas y los ornamentos tallados en piedra del ciglo dieciocho y diecinueve..

Our walking tour of the central historical district of Guanajuato began with a visit to the huge, teeming Mer-cado Hidalgo. Tzintzun and Serano guided us along the labyrinthian streets and walkways of the city, through tiny plazas and along narrow passageways until we arrived at the central jardin.

Nuestro recorido del centro histórico de Guanajuato empezo con una visita al Mercado Hidalgo. Tzintzun y Se-rano nos condujeron por las calles serpentinas de la ciudad, a traves de pequenas plazas y callejones angostos, hasta llegar al Jardín, el corazón de Guanajuato.

After a pizza dinner, all retired for a night’s sleep. Our hosts, Janet and Sigfrido had covered their studio floor with mattresses and blankets for all the little kids. Geoff and Janice vanished, headed for a nearby hotel room. The next morning, after breakfast and impromtu soccer, we explored the house again, finding wondrous flowers and other objects that we had missed the day before. Then we were off again, exploring the city streets.

Después de una cena de pizza, todos nos retiramos a dormir. Janet y Sigfrido cubrieron el piso de su estudio con colchonetas y cobijas para los jovenes. Geoff y Janice desaparecieron, y se quedaron la noche en un hotel cercano. La mañana siguiente, despues del desayuno y partidos de futball, exploramos la casa de nuevo, descubriendo hermosas flores y objetitos que no habiamos visto antes. Después salimos a aventurarnos a las calles de la ciudad.

We spent almost two hours in the Alhóndiga Museum because there was so much to see, including the most beautful collection of ex-voto paint-ings, historical exhibits covering prehispanic Mexico through the early 20th century, and magnificent murals covering the ceilings and walls.

Pasamos casi dos horas en el museo de la Alhóndiga de Granaditas. Había tanto que ver, incluyendo una hermosa colección de pinturas en el es-tilo ex-voto, exhibiciones históricas de México y unos magníficos murales que cubrian las paredes y techos.

Our final adventure was a trip up the steep hillside to the monument to El Pepila, the hero of the 1810 Mexican war for independence. From the base of the stone statue, high above the city, the vista is magnificent, a fitting and memorable conclusion to our Guanajuato adventure.

Nuestra última aventura fué un viaje con el fenicular, subiendo las laderas de la montaña, hasta llegar al monumento del Pípila, un heroe de la Guerra de Independencia del 1810. Desde la la base de la gigan-tesca estatua de piedera, en el alto de la montana, la vista era increible, una dramatica conclusión para nuetra aventura en Guanajuato.
