Monroe Squadron & Wreath Ceremony IIMonroe Squadron & Wreath Ceremony II

The headlines of area news papers proclaimed Civil AirPatrol to Lead Wreath Event, A Proper Salute, and Hon-oring the Fallen. This being the second year of the WreathCeremony some in the squadron wondered if there would bea drop in interest from the media, not so the media did anoutstanding job! The coverage started with a preview of thetimes and locations for the ceremonial. The next day after the

ceremony we again captured front page exposure provingMonroe truly loves their history and their heroes.

What proved even more satisfying was the increase appre-ciation for our efforts. The City of Monroe could not havebeen more helpful in assisting in securing the necessary per-

mits required, an added surprise came when the Mayor Mark Worrel committed to par-ticipate in this years observance. Unfortunately we all know he is battling some serioushealth issues and had to cancel that day. He did call the next day with his sincere apolo-gies and vowed to be there next year. The VFW and the Viet Nam Vets attended butthis year the American Legion also showed interest. After the ceremony the VFWsCeremonial Team Sergeant shared some ideas to further embellish the ritual. Very in-

spiring that they not only want to participate but add to the ceremony. Hopefully bynext season we might get the Am Vets to attend also. The most surprising contact wasan e-mail from the Friends of the River Raisin a group that honors those from the Warof 1812. President Kenneth Howard thanked us for including the1812 battle field in our memorial ceremony and invited us to at-tend their annual memorial in late January.

MI-063 would like to again thank USAF Reserve Captain JasonBylow for his help in coordinating the cadets. Each individualmonument has a different approach and stations and requiresexclusive choreographing. Thanks to the Detroit 100 Squadronwho made the drive to support our efforts to honor our fallen

heroes. A very special thanks to 2Lt Sherrie Brent for driving theDetroit Cadets down for practices and the ceremony.

The loudest shout out goes out to the cadets who preformedthe Wreath Ceremony! To make sure you know the cold, darkevening practices were appreciate, the VFW Ceremonial Teamhad nothing but positive comments on your efforts.

Be Assured the Veterans and All CAP Personal

    definitely appreciated your efforts!

Christmas Day has come and gone. The house is quiet and we are able to relax and await 2009, the new year. The ephasis is on new. We will have new programs, new projects, new training, new goals, Everything new!

Looking back briefly, I need to retract part of that statement. Some of the goals for 2009 actually started in 2008. Ogoal is to get ALL of our pilots CAP qualified. Another is to get our Chaplain registered with National (seems his appcation and paperwork are going by pony express). Another goal is to train, and have at ready, a fully functioning GrounTeam!

A major item we need to reflect on is the work that all of you did this past year. Because of your efforts the MonrSquadron is being recognized throughout the Wing for its achievements. We passed our first Subordinate Unit Inspetion (SUI). We now have a CAP Aircraft, our first. We have a CAP van, another first (we once had the Wing Communcations van assigned to us because we were the only Squadron that could park it inside). We have almost as many Catains in the squadron as Lieutenants! I cannot remember this squadron ever having three Captains. Two Mitchell Cadin a single year! That is an amazing accomplishment by itself.

I can continue with the history of first in 2008 but instead I will just say Thank You for everything you have doto support the squadron. There is no I in team! The only I in this team is the I that appreciates all of your hawork and dedication and I really do. I originally joined this squadron in 1991 and have never been more proud to bpart of it.

As for new, we can look forward to new training with new faces. Our squadron will become more involved with traing along side members of other squadrons in the Group. We will have new projects and new adventures. One ventuwe plan on this year is putting the van to good use and taking the cadets on Field Trips

Another new will be new challenges. We have seen many challenges in the past and I have no doubt that this squadrcan handle any challenge that it is confronted with. With your talents and dedication most hurdles become only bum

on the road to completing he goal.I will close by saying, once again, Thank You for your efforts this past year. I look forward to serving with you in t

    coming year.

Cadets and Seniors joined together at our local Wal-Mart in an effort to inform the public about CAP and our Mis-sions in America. An outdoor display at the main entrance featuring many different departments was set up to drawas much public attention as possible. Capt Walter had rockets on display to attract area youth to Aerospace programs.Lt Nick Roberty had his model Cessna on display which is a magnet draw to those interested in aviation. A compos-ite group of 10 dressed in a variety of CAP uniforms to work the Saturday recruitment event. Over one hundred andfifty CAP brochures were passed to those who stopped by seeking information. Of course only time will tell if therecruitment effort was a success but those who worked it agreed it was a positive experience. Aerospace Educationseemed to attract the most attention of the cadet aged people. The seniors all commented on how adults repeatedthat they had heard about CAP but had no idea how far reaching our programs were. Remember Americas best keptsecret..Civil Air Patrol.

A big thumbs up goes to our Squadron Commander for his persistence in setting up this effort. For some reason thestore manager was awfully hard to get a commitment from, only his persistence made this happen.

With the start of this new year Cadet Major Spenser Stevenson will return to the position of CadetCommander. C/M Stevenson has had a very interesting 5 years in CAP and as he approaches the endof his cadet eligibility he shared some of his thoughts.

He joined Civil Air Patrol after attending an air show and visiting a CAP booth. He had alwaysthought of serving his country but at 15 there are few opportunities. He had heard of CAP but never

really knew exactly what CAP did. At that air show he spotted a CAP booth and decided to take alook. He spent a long time in that booth learning about CAP and its programs. After that visit he toldhis Grandparents he wanted to join CAP:. He cautions everyone to think about how important thisvisit was in getting him to enroll when you staff a booth.

He originally joined a cadet squadron and had a feeling something was missing. At his first encamp-ment he met cadets from other squadrons learned about the different opportunities available in a com-posite squadron. After talking to a Monroe cadet he decided to come to the Monroe Squadron. Hefelt Monroe had it all, a working airport and a well working cadet program. He immediately loved it!That was obvious as he rapidly completed programs and rose through the ranks. In two years he be-came Cadet Commander of the Monroe Squadron.

Unfortunately he felt he needed to take break from CAP which lasted for about a year. He mentionedthough The entire time I was gone I felt like something was missing. I missed the feeling of the wearof a proper uniform, the way I felt on a Search and Rescue Mission, even the feel of a commanderchewing me out for not having reports in on time. As time passed the feeling did not go away so Ivisited the squadron and after a hair cut, shave and a new uniform I was back and feeling great!

On his return to C/Commander he stated, After finding out the Cadet Commander was steppingdown we sat and discussed the possibility of my return. I want to thank him for his support. I am veryhappy that as of the 1st of this year I will take Command of the Cadet Program of the Monroe Com-posite Squadron. My goal is to make this program better than when I came in and left. I want to lookback at this as one of the greatest things I ever did.

The Monroe Squadron publicized its annual Christmas Party for Seniors would be at the Lone Star restaurantin Dundee. Everyone was prepared to have a relaxing evening of socializing with their squadron mates and

their significant other. However, two members of the squadron would find out that evening that they had beenselected by their peers to be honored for their service to CAP. They would be the first to receive squadronshirts, challenge coins, and their own Call Sign. No amount of money can purchase these shirts, only by ser-vice above and beyond will a member be presented this honor.

The process started more than three months prior to the party when it was decided to honor these two men. Then via e-mails and private squadron discussions the decisions were made on exactly how to honor the pair.By unanimous vote everyone agreed on the idea of squadron shirt and call signs, BUT what call sign. Onceagain by e-mail different ideas where passed until a all were in agreement we had the correct fit. per person.

The first member to receive squadron honors was 1Lt Carl Sweeney. We all know Carl as aprivate business owner that would rather be flying than anything else. He routinely logs moreair time than anyone else in Wing! If there is a ELT Carl is on it, Orientation Flights when-ever asked, CN searches each week all summer not counting the time in the UP, SAR/DRtraining mission always there, and so on and so forth. Bottom line is when Wing needs Carl he

wasALWAYS ready and willing. The squadron took the always willing and shifted it to Eveready for hiscall sign. Lt Sweeneys Squadron shirt proudly proclaims the Nine Lives logo with our addition of theEveready name at the bottom . At the presentation he was told he was really close to having a pink bunnywith a drum on his shirt..

Moving up in rank our second member honored was Lt Col Mark Woodruff. Col Woodruffwas honored for his continual commitment to CAP through out the years. He has acceptedevery role and task CAP has asked of him. He has accepted leadership roles in the squadron, group, and wing. When asked recently he accepted the Squadron Commanders role in a diffi-cult transition period. His call sign was based on a combination of his 20 years of dedication

to the Marine Corps, CAP being the USAF Auxiliary, his private pilots license and his CAPObservers rating. Add them all together and the obvious call sign is Air Dog.

It was discussed after the ceremony that by accepting these squadron shirts they have also accepted to becomethe committee to select new members and to set up any by laws of this select group. Congratulations toEveready & Air Dog you certainly deserve this recognition!

    Monroe Squadron Adds Opening Ceremony

After months of discussion and with the assistance of USAF Reserve Capt Jason Bylow our squadron meetings noopen with an official ceremony. In the past a Flight of cadets would raise the flag to open a weekly meeting befothe seniors were even there. The cadets requested an opening ceremony and the command staff agreed it would adto our squadron. First it was decided that the time for the ceremony should be adjusted so that all members woube in attendance. Next ceremonial ideas were discussed and experiment with until finally it was decided to contaCapt Bylow and make use of his Base Security ceremonial expertise. In one evening practice our new opening flceremony was complete. The opening has received positive squadron feed back as each opening has 100% squadrattendance. The ceremony has also drawn attention from those participating or watching soccer or baseball games.

Now that the weather has turned cold we have altered the ceremony and our formations to accommodate the indoor ceremony. Future plans are to include the National Anthem to be played on our sound system.

In separate ceremonies the Monroe Squadronnow has two new Captains, Jeff Walters and thenJay Jondro. The promotions were about a monthapart due to time in service requirements but it isno coincidence they promoted so close together. The two joined forces to pass the Air University00013 Senior Officer Course. This collaborationstarted when they traveling together to a Regionalcourse offered by the Ohio Wing. The one dayclass was designed to prepare those getting ready

to take this test. The Ohio Wing Commander ex-plained Ohio decided to offer the course after thehigh rate of testing failures detoured membersfrom advancing. On the return trip the two de-cided to study together. They shared their knowl-edge strengths together and after multiple studytable sessions were ready to test.

Both had family attend the promotion ceremo-nies held at Squadron Headquarters. After theceremony a luncheon was shared by all in atten-dance.

    Apollo 11th - 40th Anniversary

Do you remember the launch of Apollo11 and the first Lunar landing mission?

This historic mission took place on July16, 1969. The massive Saturn V rocketlifted off from NASAs Kennedy SpaceCenter with astronauts Neil Armstrong,Michael Collons, and Edwin Buzz

Aldrin at 9:32 A.M. EDT. Four dayslater, on July 20, Armstrong and Aldrinlanded on the moons surface while

Collins orbited overhead in the Com-mand Module. Armstrong and Aldringathered samples of lunar material anddeployed scientific experiments thattransmitted data about the lunar environ-ment. With the cool weather and holi-days the last quarter, we did not have alot of time for aerospace activities. But

with the start of a new quarter, there ismuch to get excited about. The biggest

being the 40th Anniversary of theApollo 11 moon landing. I would like torequest the cadets and seniors, tostart bringing in articles, posters, models, and other material related tothe 1969, July moon landing.

We also enrolled in the CAP AEX pro-gram and will be striving for the AEX

Award. Lets make it Happen !

If you have not been to thesquadron headquarters

    lately you might not be

    aware that we received a

    very nice donation of a

    model aircraft collection.

    The collection filled two

    display cases, and there

    might be more coming!
