Tom / United Kingdom The best way to learn English is go and live in an English country, take English lessons and get lots of English friends. Failing that, you just have to put in a lot a time and a lot of practice.

George / United States The best way to learn English, I guess it would just be by talking to people in English and just keep going at it and keep going at it, and eventually you’ll get it I think.

Jess / United Kingdom The best way to learn English I think would be to go to England or to an English native speaking country and live there for maybe for a year or two years. I learnt a lot of Spanish by having a Spanish boyfriend, so I would also recommend a close relationship with someone who speaks the language you want to learn.

Michael / Singapore The best way to learn English is to take whatever you learn in class and to practice it outside of class, because we know that most of the students they just learn it in class but they don’t have opportunities to practice what they learn outside, so if you don’t have any English speaking friends, what you can do is of

course go online and there’s a lot of pen pals and you can just make some friends online to practice your English and that would work as well.

Mike / United States Well, nobody learns the same the way so there are a lot of ways to learn. I think the best way is probably to vary the learning methods. Do a little reading, a little speaking, a little writing, and a little listening. Try to combine the different methods and get a balanced approach.

Hanna / Australia The best way to learn English is to make lots of friends who speak English. If you have a lot of friends who speak English, then it becomes a very interactive experience and you also have incentive to learn more.

You are going to listen to five women talking about their career choices.

You have one minute to read task 1. (1 minuto)

Now listen to the recording and do the task. You will listen to the text twice. (5 segundos y campanilla)

Speaker

One

I was always playing some part in school plays and enjoyed watching my performances on

video over and over. I had often dreamt of becoming a professional actor, but I had never

taken lessons or even talked to my parents about it. So they probably thought it was a

hobby more than anything else. But when I finished secondary school, I went straight into

drama school. My father was shocked at the idea – he had a bookshop and he really

wanted me to follow the family business. But my mum was very supportive and she was

the one who helped me make my dream come true.

Speaker

Two

In fact, I’d started medical school, following my father’s footsteps, and I was already in

my second year at university. But there was a strong voice in me telling me again and

again that I was not cut out to be a doctor. Then one summer I started giving biology

lessons to private students and it was then that I realised how much I enjoyed explaining

things and noticing my students’ progress. So that same year, I started training to become

a teacher. And here I am, five years later, teaching biology at secondary school.

Speaker

Three

It was all very funny. I’d left secondary school with no idea what I was going to do. I only

knew I needed time to explore. So I took a couple of years off. My parents supported me

at first, but then, of course, they got really anxious – they thought I was wasting my time.

But I wasn’t! You see, I had a lot of free time; I was doing lots of fun things in my spare

time and I was enjoying myself so much! Also, I noticed how difficult it sometimes was to

decide what hobby to take up, or where or who with ... what I mean is there was no one at

hand to consult. And I became so experienced, that my own friends started to ask me for

advice. So what do I do now? (Laughing) I run a consultancy and I advise people

professionally on how to spend their free time wisely.

Speaker

Four

I was changing one temp job for another, doing whatever came my way – the idea was to

gain experience that would help me decide what I could do for the rest of my life, until

one day, I saw the light! I had been working for an elderly lady, looking after her. Let me

tell you, it was no easy job – I had to feed her, bathe her, cook for her, read to her... But I

found that I actually enjoyed it and that I was quite good at it. Then I found out I could

train to become a professional nurse. So I did. And now that’s how I make my living,

looking after the elderly, and I love it.

Speaker

Five

It was when my husband lost his job that I had to find something to do to pay the bills. I

had no qualifications and I had no work experience of any kind. But I had to find a way

out of the difficult situation we were in. I’d always cooked pretty well and so I was talking

to a friend about the situation at home and how desperate I was, and she happened to say,

“Why don’t you start a catering service?” I hesitated for a moment, but then I thought,

“Well, why not?!” So I used my initial skills, went to culinary school and got my degree

and I’ve run a successful catering business ever since.

TRANSCRIPT SAMPLE 3:

Welcome to another edition of ‘Cars and you!’

Listen to several people answering today’s question: Have you ever had a road accident?

Speaker 1

Yes, I have, actually. It was just shortly after I got my driver’s license. So, I was anxious to go out into the

street. I was driving in a parking lot and I was going through a small intersection and I looked to my left, and

there was a car coming towards me and it was actually going a lot faster than I thought, so it basically

slammed right into my car. Thankfully, neither myself or my sister were injured.

Speaker 2

Yeah, I had an accident when I was nine years old – a car accident. I stole a key from my mom and I drove

this car although I couldn’t reach the pedals. I had to go down and reach the pedal, come up and then look at

the window to see where I am going, and I hit the garage of one of my neighbours, and so hard that the door

fell and I was... the car was under the garage. That was my accident and it was scary because a few minutes

earlier children had been playing there and their mom had asked them to put on some shoes because they

were going to a party and as soon as they entered the house this accident happened, so they were screaming,

I was screaming. It was scary.

Speaker 3

I was in an accident once. I was making a left turn, and another car hit the side of my car. It was coming

straight at me. I shouldn’t have made the left turn. It was completely my fault, and we had to pull over, and

my car was ruined, and the front of their car was ruined, and the police had to come. And I was really shaken

up because of the accident and because an officer was asking me questions. I was only actually twenty at the

time, and after that I decided to become a very careful driver and I have not been in an accident since.

Speaker 4

A serious accident? OK. When I was in Thailand, I rented a motorbike for the day with my girlfriend

actually because we were planning to drive to the other side of the island to do some diving. I don’t know if

you’ve been to Thailand but on the ... the roads were ... they were not very safe and I started to slide and then

I tried to control the bike, but unfortunately it slipped from under me and we both fell off the bike. They

should do something about those roads.

Speaker 5

Yes, I have. When I was sixteen, I was riding my bicycle home from work and somebody pulled their

bicycle in front of me and I hit them and flew over their handle bars and hurt my arm.

Speaker 6

Yes, I have actually. It was a car accident and it wasn’t very serious but it was supposedly my fault, although

I tend to disagree, but I was pulling out into a busy street and I didn’t see that there were two lanes, and yeah,

the car came up and hit me on the side. That was it. It was my fault. I had to pay.

J This week is guide dogs’ week. So for this week’s podcast in English.com we’re talking about guide

dogs for the blind.

R Yes, the guide dogs organization trains dogs to help blind people. It’s been going a long time, hasn’t it,

Jackie?

J Yes. It started back in 1931 when two women trained four dogs.

R So four dogs, right? How many dogs do they have today?

J The organization now is responsible for about eight thousand dogs.

R So how are they trained?

J Well, there are three main stages to the training, Richard. The first stage is when they very, very little,

when they are puppies. There, they’re just made to play with each other, and play with other people.

R Right. And what’s stage two?

J Well, at about six weeks old, until they are a year old...

R Six...? Oh, that’s young!

J Hum... All they do is they walk around. So, they have these puppy walking volunteers and they take

the dogs everywhere: on public transport, in the city centre, in the countryside... so that the dogs are

used to all the kinds of things that they would face in the future.

R Right, ok. And stage three?

J Well, that’s probably the most important part. For 26 weeks, they go to a training school.

R And then they learn to do these other specialized tasks.

J Yes, six months intensive training and they know how to deal with all the situations that might occur.

R Right. So all this training and then, how long do they stay with their owners?

J They’re introduced to a possible person. Together they have three weeks training. Then, if that works

and the dog and the person a happy together, they stay together for about 6 to 7 years.

R Right. OK. This all sounds expensive.

J It is expensive, you’re right, Richard. 50,000 pounds is the lifetime cost.

R 50,000 pounds per dog?

J Per dog.

R Wow! And who pays for this? Where does the money come from?

J All the money comes entirely from the public.

R Wow! Fantastic! We haven’t asked... What types of dogs do they mainly use for this?

J 87% of the dogs are Labradors.

R Haha... Labradors like ours!

J Golden retrievers.

R OK.

J Or a mix of both of them.

R Because they had the easiest to train, is that right?

J I think so, yes.

R And they do make a difference, don’t they?

J They certainly do. These dogs, they give a new life to people who can’t see very well. It’s fantastic!

R And good for the dogs as well, I’m sure.

J They get lots of walking!

TRANSCRIPT - SAMPLE 2

You are going to listen to a woman telling a story in English to a group of adult speakers of another

language who are visiting a narrative workshop during a book fair. (40 segundos)

You have one minute to read task 2. (1 minuto)

Now listen to the recording and do the task. You will listen to the text twice.

Storyteller: Welcome, everybody. My name’s Karen Bradshaw, and I’m going to treat you to a nice

little story, which I’m sure you’ll all enjoy. It’s an old folk tale called The Purse of Gold.

But, before we get started, let me check a few things. Do you know what a purse is?

Audience: (With a marked foreign accent) Isn’t it a wallet to put money in?

Storyteller: Yes, it is. We use purses to put money in. But at the time THE PURSE OF GOLD takes

place, a purse was a small bag to put gold in, not money, you see.

And in the story there’s also a beggar. What’s a beggar? Do you know?

Audience: (With a marked foreign accent) A very poor man.

Storyteller: That’s right. (a brief pause)And what is a reward?

Audience: How do you spell it?

Storyteller: That’s R-E-W-A-R-D? REWARD.

Audience: (With a marked foreign accent) I think it is like a compensation for a favour, yes?

Storyteller: Exactly! That is a very clear definition! (Explaining further) When you do someone a

favour, they may compensate you with a reward. They give you something as a way to

say “thank you”... (Pause) So now that we all know what a purse is, what a beggar is and

what a reward is, we seem to be ready for my story. Are we?

Audience: (many enthusiastic voices like a small crowd) Yeah!

Storyteller: Well, you see, in the market, which was full of people, there was this old beggar.

Suddenly, he saw a leather purse on the ground. His first reaction was not to pick it up:

you might think that, being so poor, he would just steal something and run away. But not

this beggar: he was not this type. All he did was look around and wait to see if there was

anyone looking desperately for their purse. (Pause)

As nobody seemed to have lost anything, he finally bent down and picked up the purse.

Of course, he was very curious so he opened it, and – to his amazement –, he discovered

that it contained 100 pieces of gold! Can you imagine what this amount could mean for a

poor man like this old beggar? He just couldn’t believe it!

Suddenly, he heard a merchant shout, “A reward! A reward to the one who finds my

leather purse!”

Being an honest man, the beggar came to him and handed him the purse “Here is your

purse.” (Pause) “May I have the reward now?”

“The reward?” reacted the merchant, while he counted the money in the purse. “What are

you talking about?! The purse I dropped had 200 pieces of gold in it. Here there are only

half of them – that means you’ve already stolen more than the reward! So go away or I’ll

tell the police!”

“I’m an honest man, Sir!” said the beggar defiantly. “Let us take this matter to court.”

(Pausing at strategic moments to increase the suspense) In court, the judge patiently

listened to both sides of the story. After this, he finally said, “I believe you both. And

Justice is possible! Merchant, you stated that the purse you lost contained 200 pieces of

gold. Well, that’s a considerable amount! But, the purse this beggar found had only 100

pieces of gold. Therefore, it couldn’t be the one you lost.”

And, with that, (pause) the judge gave the purse (pause) and all the gold (pause)

(surprising the audience) to the beggar!

Audience: (laughter and clapping)

Storyteller: (laughter and clapping continue) Thank you! Thank you! I’m glad you liked it! ... And if

you wish to buy my book with this story and many others like it, I invite you to... (voice

fading off)

Interviewer: In just under a week our next guest’s video of her singing Lady Gaga’s Born this way got

over 10 million hits on Youtube. It was her dream to be on this show, and we decided to

make it come true, so from Denver, Colorado please welcome, Lucy May.

Interviewer: That’s you singing Lady Gaga’s song, isn’t it? You are, how old Lucy?

Lucy May: I’m 12 years old.

Interviewer: 12 years old and I’ve been told you started very young.

You’ve been singing for how long?

Lucy May: for about 9 years...

Interviewer: Really!? Since you were 3?

Lucy May: Yeah, since I was 3, but back then I don’t think I really understood what the songs were

about. I just got hooked on the melodies.

Interviewer: So... why did you choose to do this Lady Gaga song?

Lucy May: Because of the meaning of the song... It´s about just being yourself because God made you

who you are and you should love what makes you different.

Interviewer: That’s a good message, isn’t it? So you did the song and you posted it on Youtube and it got

some attention and then all of a sudden it got Lady Gaga’s attention which I suppose was

your dream, wasn’t it? ...that it got to her and she saw it.

Lucy May: Well, it’s not every day that you get to talk to a superstar and you get feedback from her

saying that you did a great cover of one of her songs!!! I´ve always looked up to Lady Gaga.

Interviewer: Yeah and the moment she does that, she gives you her support // and all of a sudden you get

10 million hits and everybody is talking about you! And... then while you were being

interviewed on a radio programme, she called in to talk to you. Isn’t that right?

Lucy May: Yes! I couldn’t believe my ears when she phoned the radio programme to say she liked my

song. We talked and I found out she was actually having a bad day. Before she hung up, she

said I’d made her day!!! Can you believe that? I made her happy!! Which is really

awesome!!!!! ...Imagine having the chance to talk to such a cool person...

Interviewer: ...and to cheer her up!!!! She probably has a lot of pressure and a lot going on in her life... So

she is having a bad day and here you are cheering her up. Incredible!

Lucy May: And not only that, she invited me to sing with her at a concert on her next American tour.

Interviewer: Wow, // that’s amazing. You should go for it! How do you feel about that? Are you nervous?

Lucy May: You bet! It’s kind of incredible. She’s a superstar and I’m only beginning.

Interviewer: That’s true, she’s a superstar and your career has just started. But you should just know that

she believes in you enough to ask you to do it. So, enjoy it! And you are going to sing for us

today, right?

Lucy May: Yeah. That’s right.

Interviewer: So, ladies and gentlemen, let’s listen to Lucy May singing live for us today Born this way.

This is a text on how a well-known brand was persuaded to join the fight against bullying.

Read the following texts and do the tasks below.

How “Abercrombie & Fitch” Signed On Against Bullying

JULY 5th, 2018– BY CALI LINSTROM

When the clothing retailer’s CEO1

made comments

about the exclusivity of his brand, Cali Linstrom

convinced him to join her anti-bullying campaign.

At the beginning of this year, if you had told me I’d be meeting with corporate executives to encourage a movement which consists of creating allies to combat bullying in America and traveling around

the country, I wouldn’t have believed you.

Let me explain how this all started. In May of this year, I was on Facebook with my friends and I came across Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries’ comments from an article in a popular magazine. Among the appalling comments on the style of clothes they manufacture, were:

“We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends,” he said. “A lot of people don’t belong, and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.”

As a person who has struggled with an eating disorder and tried to commit suicide because of the humiliation of being bullied, I did not want to ignore such terrible comments so I decided to start with a protest.

I contacted my documentary filmmaker friend Darryl Roberts to help me plan the demonstration and together with a local eating disorder organization, we were able to get a group of about 35 teens and their mothers to protest in front of one of Abercrombie & Fitch’s stores. We got a lot of news coverage and it felt like a big success because of all of the awareness that was raised.

However, there was no response from Abercrombie & Fitch, so we planned another protest at their main office. In order to make us call off the second protest, the CEO Mike Jeffries apologised and asked me to meet with them to discuss their relationship with teens. I went to the corporate headquarters of Abercrombie & Fitch in Ohio with my parents, Darryl and a couple of eating disorder professionals.

I addressed several of the most important executives, and even met Mike Jeffries. In the end, Darryl and I, together with a lead consultant on bullying, came up with the “Are You an Ally?” anti-bullying campaign, in which I would be sent to 20 high schools across the country to share the message of respect for diversity through inclusion, and how to become an ally in the fight against bullying. I was impressed at how willing Abercrombie and Fitch were to make a commitment to take action against bullying and discrimination and support diversity and inclusion.

On balance, I am fully satisfied with the results. Together with Abercrombie & Fitch we produced a fifty-minute presentation aimed at high school freshmen

2. It is my goal to help young people everywhere finally

feel safe, and not alienated and hated for being different. Anybody, from the shy little boy reading a book in the corner to Miss America, can be a victim. And things have to change.

I am so grateful to be a part of this movement to encourage everyone to become an ally to stop people from being bullied, and hurting themselves and others. Anyone can be a part of the problem, but with a little effort everyone can choose to be a part of the solution instead!

1 Clothing retailer’s CEO: chief executive officer of a clothing sales company.

2 Freshmen: students in first year.

This is a text written by a woman who left her mobile phone behind at home one morning.

Read the text and do the task.

I was half way through to work when I realised I wasn’t carrying my mobile phone. I had to reach the office on time and decided against turning back home, which made me feel incredibly deficient.

Using public transport makes it impossible to avoid the people around

with their phones. Some were playing games, some were chatting, some

were listening to music while others were watching films!

I looked at them helplessly wishing my phone was in my hands. To stop

feeling miserable, I recalled my childhood, a time when there were no

mobiles and yet people connected easily. Then, no one would have

dreamt of a cordless phone supported by satellite.

Now, such an instrument is child’s play! We have turned into slaves to technology. I feel tremors while

holding a pen. Thanks to the keyboard, I don’t remember what my handwriting looks like!

Nonetheless, we have merrily succumbed to a robotic lifestyle where there is more time for

Facebooking and Tweeting than for relationships. We are busier adding people on Facebook than

adding colour to real life. We follow people on Twitter but seldom follow our loved ones around us.

Technology helps us do tasks and most importantly communicate easily. On the other hand, it robs us

of the real ‘me’ time. People live more in the virtual world and use ‘unreal’ Emoticons to express

themselves creating a gap between the two worlds. Perhaps, people prefer the loneliness the virtual

world lets them experience. Real emotions remain suspended inside the hearts but seldom come out.

We have happily given up penning letters to our loved ones because of e-mails. We don’t miss our

loved ones because of video chatting and Skype.

I remembered when I would get ready at 5 in the evening and wait for my parents to pick me up from

school. I had the patience to wait for them if they were late. Now, I have turned impatient. If I had to wait

for someone, I would text them endlessly until they reached the spot.

Nonetheless, I feel glad I got a break from the constant notifications on my mobile. To be honest, I am

also curious to know the number of missed calls and whatsapp messages on my phone when I get

back to it!!!

This is a text on how to audition for the stage. Read the text and do the task.

1 You are at an audition for a play. The casting director calls your number and you go to the stage.

“What monologue will you be reading?” she asks.

“Oh, sorry,” you reply. “I didn’t know I was supposed to bring one.”

“Well, I’m sorry too. You won’t be able to audition.”

This scenario can easily be avoided by following these simple audition tips.

2 Read the Audition Notice Carefully

Actors should arrive at auditions fully prepared, including the requested

material. Examine the audition notice. Should you prepare one monologue?

Two? Also, choose an appropriate text. For example, if you are auditioning for

Hamlet, prepare a scene from Shakespearean drama, not from The Simpsons.

In addition, make certain you are trying out for the appropriate part. If the

casting director is looking for a tall, bald man in his 60s and you are a short,

frizzy-haired, thirty-year-old guy, just look for another part.

3 _____________________________

Show how reliable you are by showing up at least fifteen minutes early. Be courteous, but don’t be too

talkative. Don’t bother fellow actors with trivial conversation. Spend your time mentally getting ready.

In general, think of an audition like a job interview. Avoid inappropriate behaviour like chewing gum,

swearing or making long speeches as to why you are perfect for the role.

4 Dress Appropriately

Usually, it is best to wear casual business clothes. You want to be professional but you don’t want to

look like a company manager. Many new actors make the mistake of wearing costumes to auditions.

Perhaps, they have a great pirate outfit from last Halloween. Casting directors might be amused, but

they will definitely not take the actor seriously!

5 Practise Cold Reading Familiarize yourself with the play as much as you can. If the play is new, however, it may be difficult

to purchase a copy. In that case, you’ll want to polish up your cold reading skills. Cold reading is the

act of performing lines as you read them for the very first time. It can be hard, but with practice most

actors can become quite good at it.

Do not worry if you stumble over a word. The important thing is to make the audience believe that you

are thinking and feeling the words on the page.

6 Don’t Apologize

After an audition many actors provide excuses to gain sympathy. Avoid this as much as you can.

Thank the casting director and leave the stage knowing that if you are right for the part, they will

contact you. If not, know that you did your best. And remember: there are many other wonderful roles

out there just waiting to be filled.

School Bullies There are a couple of boys in my school who are bullying another boy. He is younger than them. I feel very sorry for him. He doesn’t tell anyone. They steal his money and make him cry. Once they got his glasses and smashed them and threw them in the toilet. I would like to put a stop to this but I don’t want to get on the bullies’ bad side either. School authorities don’t seem to realize what’s going on. I feel awful and totally helpless because I’m a boy and everyone may think that trying to help is just for girls...
