Pasa su infancia en Italia y Francia, y emigra a EEUU a causa de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.Comienza a hacer fotografas a partir de final de los 40.Trabaja en un estudio fotogrfico en Hollywood y ms tarde como fotgrafo para diversas publicaciones.En 1953 forma parte de la agencia Magnum Photos y es presidente durante 3 aos.Fue fotgrafo de la Casa Blanca y colabor en Look, Life y Holiday.Su calidad artstica, su gran impacto comunicativo y su fina irona lo sitan en un lugar privilegiado de los fotgrafos del S.
