A ma a Dios y ama a tu prójimo. Este breve y claro mandamiento expresaba la totalidad de la ley de Dios. Hoy no nos gusta pensar en la palabra de Dios como

una ley, por lo que podemos decir simplemente que esta breve declaración resume toda nuestra vida cristiana.

La invitación a amar a Dios y amar a nuestro prójimo se vuelve muy concreta en el amor al prójimo. No debemos amar a cualquier vecino, sino al vecino que está justo delante de nosotros. El vecino no es la persona que vive al lado, sino cualquier ser humano que encontramos en nuestra vida. Este vecino es especialmente la persona a la que no queremos ayudar, la persona que puede habernos lastimado, la persona que parece indigna de nuestra ayuda, la persona que nos tomará más tiempo del que queremos dar.

Al considerar esta invitación al amor, podemos entender más completamente por qué nuestros antepasados en la fe no fueron fieles al Señor, como lo escuchamos en la primera lectura de hoy. Moisés fue claro en su enseñanza. Moisés enseñó a la gente lo que él sabía que Dios quería que se enseñara. Las Escrituras continúan enseñándonos lo que Dios quiere de nosotros. Es mucho más fácil cambiar el significado de las Escrituras que cambiar nuestros corazones. Entonces, en la historia de nuestra fe, tanto en el Antiguo como en el Nuevo Testamento, encontramos la tendencia a alejarnos de Dios, la tendencia a cambiar lo que Dios quiere por lo que nosotros queremos.

Podemos permitir que nuestros corazones cambien hoy o podemos continuar como somos, con corazones endurecidos haciendo las cosas a nuestra manera. Jesús nos llama: Ama a Dios y ama a tu prójimo. ¡Escúchalo!

L ove God and love your neighbor. This short and clear commandment expressed the whole of the law of God. Today we don’t like to think of God’s word as a

law, so we can say simply that this short statement sums up the whole of our Christian life. The invitation to love God and to love our neighbor becomes very concrete in the love of neighbor. It is not just any neighbor that we must love, but the neighbor who is right in front of us. The neighbor is not the person who lives next door but any human being who happens into our life. This neighbor is especially the person that we don’t want to help, the person who may have injured us, the person who seems unworthy of our help, the person who will take more of our time than we want to give. As we consider this invitation to love, we can understand more completely why our ancestors in the faith were not faithful to the Lord, as heard in the first reading today. Moses was clear in his teaching. Moses taught the people what he knew God wanted taught. The Scriptures continue to teach us what God wants of us. It is much easier to change the meaning of the Scriptures than it is to change our hearts. So in the history of our faith, both in the Old and the New Testaments, we find the tendency to turn away from God, the tendency to change what God wants into what we want. We can allow our hearts to be changed today or we can continue as we are, with hearts hardened by doing things our own way. Jesus calls to us: Love God and love your neighbor. Listen to Him.
